Kinew says drop tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to get Chinese duties dropped

WINNIPEG – Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is asking the prime minister to scrap Canada’s 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles in return for China lifting its tariffs on Canadian canola and pork.

Kinew says in a letter to Mark Carney on Saturday that while he believes protecting Canada’s vehicle industry is important, he says the country’s approach “has created a two-front trade war that disproportionally affects Western Canada.”

The premier says in the letter that China’s tariffs — widely seen as a response to Canada imposing the electric vehicle levy — have already caused a sharp drop in canola prices and that one vertically integrated pork producer in Manitoba is reporting a $19 million negative impact on an annual basis.

Toronto has seen an auto theft boom since the beginning of the pandemic — and these young scouts are a vital part of it

Michael Murphy: British multiculturalism has failed

LONDON — Now we know what globalizing the intifada looks like. In Manchester last week, a rabbi addressed his congregation in a robe stained with blood. Hours earlier, on Yom Kippur, Judaism’s holiest day, a jihadi terrorist rammed a car into worshippers at the gates of a synagogue before going on a stabbing spree. By the time officers shot the attacker, two were dead and four more injured, some from accidental police fire.

American spirit exports to Canada ‘plummeted’ 85%, says U.S. trade group

American spirit exports to Canada “plummeted” 85 per cent in the second quarter of 2025, with the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States calling the situation “very troubling” as consumers in key international markets opt for alternatives to U.S.-made products amid trade tensions.

The numbers come as American alcohol largely remains off Canadian shelves and unavailable in bars and restaurants as a response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on Canadian goods in early March.

Israel is bracing to receive all 20 hostages as part of the initial deal to end the war, with the vice-president JD Vance saying they could be handed over “any moment now”.

Israel says the exchange will happen on Monday morning, when Donald Trump is due to arrive in Israel before flying to Egypt for a truce ceremony.

No survivors found after Tennessee explosives plant blast

Sixteen people missing after a major explosion at a Tennessee munitions factory on Friday are presumed to be dead, according to the sheriff.

Recovery teams had been clinging to hope of finding any of the missing alive, as of Saturday evening “it’s safe” to assume they are deceased, said Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis.

Authorities had originally feared that 18 people had died, but two people believed present during the blast were actually not at the site and have been located, according to Davis.
