Putin aide proposes direct Russia-US tunnel

Russia US Tunnel – Bering Strait

Russia and the US should build a direct rail tunnel under the Bering Strait to link the two countries, Russian presidential aide Kirill Dmitriev has suggested.

In a post on X on Thursday, Dmitriev, who also serves as head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund (RDIF), said both nations would benefit from the route and invited billionaire Elon Musk to join through his Boring Company, which builds underground “Loop” transport systems.

KLEIN: Canadian politicians silent about Canada’s cartel crisis

Canada has a drug problem that our leaders refuse to face. This isn’t just about overdoses or addiction — though that alone is tragedy enough. It’s about cartels and organized crime groups using Canada as their safe base, running drugs into the United States and around the world while our government turns a blind eye. Everyone in Ottawa knows what’s going on. They read the same intelligence reports, they see the same RCMP briefings, and they know thousands of Canadians are dying every year. But what do we get in response? Committees, titles, press conferences — and no real action.

Spanish town bans black cat adoptions during Halloween

The Spanish town of Terrassa in north-eastern Catalonia has temporarily banned the adoption of black cats from animal shelters to prevent potentially sinister “rituals” during Halloween.

All requests for the fostering or adoption of the felines will be denied from 6 October to 10 November to protect them from being hurt or used as props, said the local animal welfare service.

Deputy Mayor Noel Duque told broadcaster RTVE that adoption requests for black cats usually increase around Halloween.

When a Harper Conservative goes after Pierre Poilievre, you know there’s blood in the water

The uprising against Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre may have officially begun.

Just three months before Poilievre’s leadership review in Calgary, Stephen Harper’s former spokesman is letting it be known that knives should be out.

Writing in the Star, Dimitri Soudas accuses Poilievre of “dismantling the principled, serious and credible Conservative party Harper worked so hard to lead and bring to power, one of substance, maturity and integrity.”

EU States Push for Deportations of Illegal Afghan Migrants

Twenty European Union member states—including Belgium, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Hungary—have jointly urged the European Commission to take concrete steps to enable both voluntary and forced returns of Afghan nationals without legal residence status.

The initiative was announced on Saturday by Belgium’s Minister for Asylum and Migration, Anneleen Van Bossuyt, who warned that the inability to deport rejected or criminal Afghan asylum seekers “undermines public trust” and “compromises security.”

Now is the time to ‘talk, not hit back’: How Mark Carney’s trade focus with the U.S. has shifted

Prime Minister Mark Carney has clearly shifted away from the assertive U.S. trade stance seen on the campaign trail seven months ago to a more cautious, conciliatory approach.

As trade tensions continue, Carney has declined to impose retaliatory tariffs in response to Trump’s protectionist measures. Instead, he and his government have pursued low-key ongoing negotiations, focused primarily on key Canadian sectors such as aluminium, steel and autos.

Back to plain old Sarah, this is the end of the royal road for Fergie

When the late Queen Elizabeth II gave her favourite son the title Duke of York on his wedding day in 1986, she was entrusting him with a dukedom that was cherished by her more than any other.

Her beloved father and mother were the Duke and Duchess of York before they became George VI and Queen Elizabeth. She herself was born Princess Elizabeth of York and her grandfather George V had also held the title.

It was the greatest of gifts and a compliment that Prince Andrew and his wife, Sarah Ferguson, returned by demeaning and degrading the dukedom for nearly 40 years.

Rights Groups Urge Ottawa to Maintain Chinese EV Tariffs Amid Canola Dispute

Human rights and civil society groups are urging Ottawa to maintain tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs), saying that allowing them into the Canadian market could pose national security risks.

Pro-democracy group Saskatchewan Stands with Hong Kong issued a press release on Oct. 16, calling on the federal government to maintain its tariffs on Chinese EVs “in light of serious national security concerns.” The call comes after China’s ambassador to Canada last weekend suggested that dropping the tariffs could prompt Beijing to lift its levies on Canadian canola–a proposal Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew have urged Ottawa to consider.

Tomahawk diplomacy: how Putin outmanoeuvred Zelensky

Ukrainians’ hopes that President Trump might conclusively swing behind their cause have once again been dashed.

On Friday, after a meeting with President Zelensky, Trump said he was looking forward to meeting President Putin and advocating a peace deal that would leave Russia in control of almost a fifth of Ukraine: “Stop at the battle line and both sides should go home, go to their families.”

One British diplomat said: “It’s a powerful reminder that while the Russians can often be crass and clumsy, they can also be unexpectedly nimble. This time, they outmanoeuvred Zelensky, there’s no point trying to pretend otherwise.”
