Tom Flanagan: Louis Riel’s leadership was ruinous for the Métis

And yet, Prime Minister Mark Carney celebrates him

Métis leader Louis Riel was hanged 140 years ago on Nov. 16, 1885. Prime Minister Mark Carney took time out of being booed at the Grey Cup for a nation-to-nation hug with David Chartrand, president of the Manitoba Métis Federation. Relying on Liberal talking points, Carney said that Riel wanted a “more inclusive Canada.” Now that the festivities are over, let’s think about Riel’s true impact upon the Métis and upon Canada.

U.S., Canadian authorities announce new arrests in efforts to prosecute fugitive Ryan Wedding

U.S. and Canadian authorities announced new arrests, indictments and sanctions on Wednesday in their continuing efforts to locate, arrest and prosecute Canadian ex-Olympic snowboarder turned fugitive Ryan Wedding, who allegedly leads a transnational crime network.

Appearing at a joint news conference in Washington, D.C., with Canadian authorities, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said authorities have worked closely with international partners. Ms. Bondi unsealed a new indictment outlining new charges, including murder and witness tampering, against more of Mr. Wedding’s alleged associates and increased the reward for information leading to Mr. Wedding’s arrest from $10-million to $15-million.

Say he’s ‘in trouble’ till you’re blue in the face, but Poilievre is staying put as leader

It seems like not an hour goes by without some political observer advancing their particular version of the thesis that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is “in trouble.”

I understand why there’s been a temptation to start writing political obituaries following the departure of two Conservative MPs, obvious though it is that each made the life choice that was ultimately best for them. Pollster David Colleto summed up the situation perfectly with this conundrum: “Poilievre’s popularity is unprecedented. But is his future safe as Conservative leader?”

The short answer is yes.

How the Conservatives helped pass Carney’s budget, avoiding an election

Minutes before time ran out on Monday’s budget vote, two senior Conservatives swooped into the chamber claiming their electronic voting app wasn’t working and declared they wanted to vote against Prime Minister Mark Carney’s first budget.

MPs Andrew Scheer and Scott Reid, the party’s House leader and caucus chair respectively, could have voted “nay” in the chamber just moments before. But they didn’t cast their votes until all of their colleagues had finished.

Bodies Keep Turning Up in Syria, Haunting New Leaders

IZRAA, Syria—Early one morning last December, Dr. Mamdouh Zoubi drove to a farm on the edge of this small town in southern Syria to collect the bodies in a newly found mass grave, one of more than 100 turned up across the country.

The new owners of the farm, which had been sold days earlier, shortly after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, had stumbled across the bodies that morning and alerted Dr. Zoubi, who is one of the only forensic specialists in the area. The burial site, now used as a tomato farm, was next to a military checkpoint that served for years as a base for Assad’s soldiers.

Islamism — the threat to Canada you won’t hear uttered by the Liberals

Since the October 7 pogrom by Hamas in southern Israel, Canada has seen a staggering surge in antisemitism, up 670 per cent in 2024, and in terrorism charges, up 488 per cent from April 2023 to March 2024. In both cases, the salient factor is Islamism.

Islamists, a small but influential fraction of Muslim communities, harbour the profound conviction that they “should deploy the necessary efforts not only to rule according to Sharia law but also to Islamize society, laws, governance, and all aspects of life…. across the Muslim world and beyond.”

Pope Leo backs US bishops’ rejection of Trump’s policies

Pope Leo XIV said many immigrants in the US were being treated in a way “that is extremely disrespectful,” supporting a recent statement by US Bishops expressing concern about immigration raids.

Pope Leo XIV has supported the US Conference of Catholic Bishops rare statement on US immigration and urged the US government to “treat people humanely.”

The Bishops’ message leveled criticism of President Donald Trump’s policies of mass deportation and the “vilification” of immigrants. The US clergy spoke about the fear and anxiety that immigration raids have sown in communities. They also rejected the denial of care to migrants in detention centers.

I don’t think many support a Pope that roots for illegal alien criminals.

Family of Indian man lynched over beef rumours vows to keep fighting for justice

The family of a Muslim man, who was lynched by a Hindu mob in India’s Uttar Pradesh state in 2015, say they will continue fighting for justice after authorities recently moved to drop all charges against the accused.

Mohammad Akhlaq, then 50, was beaten to death after rumours spread that he had stored and consumed beef, a claim his family continues to deny.

Slaughter of cows is a sensitive issue in India as the animal is considered sacred by Hindus, who comprise 80% of the country’s 1.2 billion people. Uttar Pradesh is among the 20 states with strict laws banning cow slaughter and the sale and consumption of beef.
