Olivia Chow may be Toronto’s most impactful housing mayor since amalgamation

Olivia Chow was not elected as the development industry’s mayor. Yet three years into her term, her administration has assembled the most ambitious municipal housing agenda Toronto has seen since amalgamation.

That is not the same thing as solving the housing crisis, which is real and persistent. It is, however, a record worth taking seriously.

This week offered the clearest evidence yet. Standing in Scarborough, Mayor Chow and Prime Minister Mark Carney announced more than $2.7 billion in federal investment, alongside more than $700 million from the city of Toronto, to advance 18 projects representing more than 5,600 rental homes.

A Canadian woman was arrested in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, last month in connection with the theft of a package containing thousands of dollars worth of gold and silver.

The 25-year-old, from Ontario, was charged with forgery, theft by unlawful taking and theft by deception for taking a package containing US$43,549 in gold and silver, according to Bensalem Township Police, before flying to Arizona and eventually making her way to the Canadian border in New York.

University of Michigan Drops First-Semester Grades to ‘Curb Mental Health Crisis

The University of Michigan will drop grades for first-semester freshmen next year in an effort to “curb the mental health crisis unfolding among college-aged individuals,” according to the school.

Instead of a letter grade, first-semester transcripts will show “pass or no credit.” The program is designed to help students “acclimate to the demands of college and allow intrinsic motivations to guide personally meaningful academic journeys,” the school said.

Donald Trump secretly swapped planes as he left a Nato summit in Turkey last month, as part of an elaborate ruse in response to a possible Iranian threat, US media report.

The US president boarded Air Force One in view of television cameras before being transported to a military aircraft with the help of a catering truck, the Washington Post said. Journalists and some White House staff on board did not know he had been smuggled out.

GOLDSTEIN: Corporate welfare is strangling Canadian economy: study

Corporate welfare by Canada’s federal and provincial governments has more than tripled since 2015 and is strangling economic growth, according to a new study by the Fraser Institute.

It found corporate subsidies totalled $87.7 billion in 2024 alone, with $44.7 billion coming from the federal government and $43 billion from the provincial governments combined.

That more than tripled the 2015 level of $25.1 billion, adjusted for inflation and population growth.

An asylum seeker who raped a 13-year-old girl in a wood after grooming her on Snapchat has been jailed for nine-and-a-half years.

Abdul Khan, who told police he arrived in the UK in the back of a lorry from Afghanistan in 2015, attacked the teenager a decade later.

A trial last week heard how Khan used the messaging platform Snapchat to groom the teenager by telling her he was a 14-year-old boy – when he was actually 27.

Government says it told India it has ‘zero tolerance’ for foreign interference and transnational repression

OTTAWA — A senior Public Safety official says the federal government has told its Indian counterparts that there is “zero tolerance” for transnational repression and foreign interference by its diplomats.

In a recent letter to advocacy group Sikhs for Justice (SJF), a top Public Safety official assured the group that the government has “made it clear to senior Indian officials that there is zero tolerance for transnational repression or other illegal activities by foreign diplomats in this country.”

Former Vancouver Mayor Says CCP Likely Interfering in Upcoming BC Municipal Elections

Former Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart says he believes interference by the Chinese regime is likely taking place ahead of the upcoming municipal elections.

Stewart, who led Vancouver from 2018 to 2022, says little has been done to prevent vulnerabilities that he says China exploited and which contributed to his 2022 re-election loss.

“I don’t think it’s resolved itself, and I’m sure there’s going to be interference in this election too, because nothing’s been done,” Stewart said in an Aug. 6 interview with political podcast host Aaron Pete.
