Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is reiterating his call for Prime Minister Mark Carney to extend a pause on Canada’s fuel excise tax, which is set to return on Labour Day.
Ottawa temporarily removed the tax from retail gas sales in April, a measure that will expire on Sept. 7. In a letter to Carney on Sunday, Poilievre argued the tax should remain paused until at least Canada Day 2027.

Ukraine has launched one of its largest drone attacks since the start of the war, causing a fire at a distribution warehouse near Moscow and killing at least six people overnight, according to Russian authorities.
Russia’s defence ministry said it had shot down 822 drones, while the mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, reported that 600 drones were launched towards the capital’s region, of which 201 were destroyed.
It was the biggest air raid on the Russian capital in two years, the mayor told the Tass news agency, although the rapid recent expansion of Ukraine’s drone’s capability could mean it was the largest attack wave since the start of the war in 2022.

Agents with the Canada Border Services Agency shut down a multi-week protest camp set up in northeast Calgary by international students who believe their post-graduation work permit applications were wrongfully refused.
Border services agents went to the demonstration site on Wednesday looking for people with expired visas who have overstayed their permitted time in Canada.
Chaos erupted across the US on Saturday, with three separate mass shootings threatening to snuff out dozens in Virginia, Kentucky and Chicago.
In Kentucky, five people were shot, one fatally, when gunshots rang out in a park near a packed downtown bar district Saturday evening. At least 13 shots sent revelers running for cover, footage posted by a local official showed.
‘My heart is broken. This evening we had a shooting at the park with multiple victims and one fighting for his life,’ ONE Lexington Director Devine Carama wrote.

As U.S. President Donald Trump’s Wednesday tariff deadline looms, there are worrying signs that Canadian manufacturers are going to pack up and move south of the border. This is unsurprising for a country that imposes high costs on businesses and seems to have resigned itself to being Trump’s whipping boy.
Last month, KPMG Canada released the results of a survey of 275 Canadian manufacturers conducted in May, which found that 42 per cent of them have considered, or are currently considering, moving production south of the border. Eleven per cent said they’re thinking of moving their head offices to the United States.
Alaska US Senate candidate Mary Peltola has rejected the support of Kamala Harris, her fellow Democrat, after the 2024 presidential candidate sent out a seemingly unsolicited fundraising appeal on Peltola’s behalf.
Harris, who lost Alaska – typically a Republican-voting state – by 13 points during her unsuccessful White House run, on Wednesday sent an email from her political organization to supporters of Peltola, a former US House member.

In his trade negotiations with the United States, Prime Minister Mark Carney should seize the opportunity that comes with a strong hand. Because however much pain U.S. President Donald Trump can cause Canadian exporters with his tariffs, his domestic hand is very weak.

Germany’s police union has called on officers to defy any “unconstitutional” orders if the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party comes to power.
Sven Hüber, the deputy president of the Union of Police, compared the hard-Right party to the Nazis, and said it was incumbent upon officers to uphold the constitution.
“You can’t swear an oath on the constitution and ally with its enemies at the same time,” wrote Mr Hüber in the lead article in the police union’s magazine.
I think Sven needs some remedial democracy lessons.
LINCOLN, Ont.—A Canadian activist against euthanasia says the procedure is increasingly being used as a solution to address gaps in health care and mental health services, criticizing Canada’s ever-expanding medical assistance in dying (MAID) regime.
“I think that euthanasia and assisted suicide are basically the cynical solution to everything that ails us. Palliative beds are really expensive—body bags are not,” said Jonathon Van Maren, author and communications director at the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform.
Three Afghan men are currently on trial in Germany for allegedly gang raping a 17-year-old girl while she was unconscious.
One of the men, 25-year-old Kambiz H., fled following the alleged crime and was arrested in London.
Kambiz, alongside Quais W., 20, and Burhanulla N., 19, are accused of having approached the victim at 4am on September 21, 2024, at the Leopoldstraße bus stop in Dortmund’s northern district.
