Pope urges Europe to do more for migrants while visiting gateway island
Pope Leo XIV has called on European leaders to rise to the “momentous challenge” of handling migration as he visited the Italian island of Lampedusa.
The pontiff urged Europe to help new arrivals integrate better and improve conditions in their home countries, during a mass on the island, which receives tens of thousands of migrants a year.
“Those who have lost their lives in this sea are victims both of decisions that were made and of decisions that were not made,” the Pope said.
NATO’s European members and Canada have signaled a readiness to fully take over the financing of Ukraine’s fight against Russia
NATO members are hoping to pledge €70 billion ($80 billion) in military aid to Ukraine for 2026 and “at least equivalent levels” of support in 2027, when they meet at an upcoming summit in Turkey on July 6 and 7.
The funding pledge was revealed in a released text of the summit’s declaration, which was approved by the ambassadors of all NATO’s 32 members, including the United States.
… European NATO members and Canada will provide the majority of the funding.
The move comes in response to declining support to provide aid to Ukraine by US President Donald Trump, with Kyiv’s European allies signaling a readiness to take over the financing of Ukraine’s fight against Russia.

Two-tier justice row as police arrest white man ‘assaulted by black men’
West Midlands Police have been accused of carrying out two-tier justice after a white man was arrested after being assaulted by several black men.
The force is facing calls to release full footage of the incident, which happened in Birmingham on June 21.
Footage shared on social media shows a white man being arrested following a physical confrontation with a group of black men.

Hoekstra says no ‘significant progress’ in 14 months of trade negotiations, but U.S. to keep talking
The U.S. envoy to Canada says 14 months of trade talk between Canada and the Trump administration has resolved few issues, but insists the Americans will keep talking in the hopes of striking an agreement on the future of CUSMA, as well as settling other issues.
U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra made the remarks on CBC’s Ottawa Morning, where he was asked by host Rebecca Zandbergen how far apart he believes Canada and the United States are on settling the trade irritants that are frustrating a renewal of CUSMA.
Henry Nowak’s killer ‘applies to have murder conviction quashed AND his sentence reduced’
Henry Nowak’s killer has launched a bid to have his murder conviction quashed and his sentence reduced.
Vickrum Digwa, 23, was jailed for life last month with a minimum 21-year term after he stabbed Mr Nowak, 18, to death in December with a ceremonial dagger.
Digwa did not know his teenage victim but ‘lied’ to officers at the scene by claiming Mr Nowak shouted racist abuse, punched him and knocked off his turban.

Court Finds Syrian Home Care Workers Abused Swedish Elderly People in Their Care
Two former home care workers of Syrian descent, Ghazi Jamal Eddin and Mohammad Kher Alhasan in Örebro have been convicted of filming and humiliating elderly people in their care, a case that has prompted Swedish MEP (Sweden Democrats/ECR) Charlie Weimers to call for the deportation of those responsible.
One of the culprits, Eddin, a 22-year-old Syrian man, was found guilty of 36 counts of offensive photography and seven counts of molestation after recordings showed him verbally abusing vulnerable residents while carrying out his duties. According to the district court, he repeatedly filmed elderly people in their own homes without their knowledge or consent, often targeting victims suffering from dementia, before sharing some of the recordings with others.
