Police in Scotland on Saturday reportedly arrested a suspect for allegedly carrying out multiple stabbings near a mosque. He was immediately identified as a “36-year-old white Scottish man” by a news media that routinely refuses to mention the race and/or citizenship status of non-white perpetrators. Video shared on social media captured the apparent vigilante explaining, “I’m protecting the country from these f*cking Muslim bastards raping our young daughters, raping our kids. Enough is enough. I have had enough.”

Memory is a trickster, but I am quite sure that when I was growing up, in the Eighties and Nineties, it was extremely unusual to see individual houses flying the Union Jack or the St George’s Cross. You might see a few more during big football tournaments, especially on cars and vans, but it just didn’t happen, by and large. This was a noticeable difference not only from the United States, but also from several other European nations.

French music festival descends into stabbings and rapes with multiple women stabbed with syringes

More than 240 people were arrested, two people stabbed, and others raped, as France’s biggest open air music festival descended into intense violence.

The 40-year-old man and woman, who have not been named, were attacked in the early hours of Monday at the Fête de la Musique – a nationwide ‘street party’ attended by thousands of British people.

Police also reported two alleged rapes, multiple other sexual assaults, muggings, and girls being stabbed with syringes, on a night of anarchy.

I don’t recall exactly when it was that I learned that it took a bit more than eight minutes for the sun’s light to reach us here on Earth. Sometime before high school, I think. Anyway, that pedestrian fact made a deep impression on me. I knew that light traveled at a fixed speed and that its operation wasn’t (quite) instantaneous, although in our quotidian lives, it seemed almost so.

But the fact that the sunlight we see all about us is eight minutes old made a deep and disconcerting impression on my young self. Who knows what might have happened to the Sun in the meantime?
