Getting my Canadian permanent residency should have felt like a win. But I’ve lost a lot along the way

I was 18 when I moved to Canada as a Nepalese international student, carrying two suitcases and a simple dream: to study, build a career and eventually call this country home. However, I didn’t fully understand when I first arrived how uncertain and emotionally exhausting the journey to permanent residency could be.

While I studied psychology and international relations at the University of British Columbia, I interned at the Canadian Cancer Society and worked as a research assistant in a lab. I said yes to opportunities, built connections and slowly started to feel like I belonged here.

I didn’t know Canada had a crisis level shortage of psychology and international relations majors.

U.S., China to slash tariffs on goods worth US$30B after Trump-Xi meeting

The United States and China released Monday reciprocal lists of products worth about US$30 billion each that will see tariff cuts, from American hair products to Chinese toys, in a deal expected to boost bilateral trade.

The details came days after Chinese President Xi Jinping met with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington in his first state visit to the U.S. since 2015. The U.S. had already reduced tariffs against China after Trump’s tariffs reached as high as 145 per cent at one point last year, as tensions between the two countries eased.

RAF base terror suspects are British nationals

Five men arrested on suspicion of terror offences at RAF Fairford are all British nationals in their 20s from London, counter-terrorism police have said.

The men were pictured on Sunday being apprehended, shirtless, near the RAF base in Gloucestershire, which is being used by the US air force in its operations against Iran.

Police said three of them were 24, one was 25 and one 23, and three resided in Westminster, one in Camden and the other in Willesden. Officers said the men were being held under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act and a custody extension had been secured until later on Monday.

The terrorist was killed by an airstrike on the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, in an operation carried out by Israel Police’s Gideonim Unit 33.

At least 27 dead after two mass shootings in South Africa, police say

Two separate mass shootings near South Africa’s two biggest cities killed at least 27 people, as the country grapples with one of the world’s highest murder rates amid investigations into corruption and criminality within the police.

The South African police service said on Sunday that 17 people were killed on Saturday night when eight suspects armed with AK-47 assault rifles and pistols opened fire at a bar in Wedela township, about 50 miles south-west of central Johannesburg. At least 15 other people sustained gunshot injuries in that attack, police said.

Trump says RAF Fairford terror suspects were ‘looking to do big damage’ to US forces as Iran link is probed

Donald Trump has warned the five men arrested over a foiled terror attack at RAF Fairford were ‘looking to do big damage’ to US forces.

The arrests come amid heightened concerns around the threat from hostile states to the UK, with Russia among those that have used proxies to commit crimes on their behalf on British soil.

However, counter-terrorism police are understood to be probing a potential link to Iran.
