Terry Glavin: China couldn’t be more pleased to have Carney as prime minister

To discern how Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government sees Canada’s place in a radically changed world, the federal budget tabled this week won’t help you as much as you might think. There’s a lot there — the budget’s $78.3-billion deficit is the third highest in Canadian history — but what’s not there may give you a better idea. How Canada is seen in the big, weird outside world — that too has utterly changed.

Trump goes to war with ‘fake news’ BBC

Donald Trump’s White House has accused the BBC of “purposeful dishonesty” amid a row over bias at the broadcaster.
It launched its attack over the way the corporation selectively edited a speech made by the president, dismissing it as “100 per cent fake news.”
British taxpayers were being “forced to foot the bill for a leftist propaganda machine”, Karoline Leavitt, Mr Trump’s press secretary said.

Just how big is B.C.’s Aboriginal title iceberg, anyway? Enormous …

VICTORIA — A claim of Aboriginal title to all of Kamloops, the Sun Peaks resort and surrounding lands has languished in plain sight in the B.C. Supreme Court registry for 10 years.

The Shuswap (Secwépemc) Nation’s claim came to light this week courtesy of Elenore Sturko, the much-on-the-ball independent MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale.

Chairman Chow defends calling Gaza war a genocide

Mayor Olivia Chow on Tuesday defended her recent remarks on the war in Gaza that have sparked complaints to both the provincial human rights tribunal and the city’s integrity commissioner.

At a charity gala hosted by the National Council of Canadian Muslims on Saturday, Chow gave a speech, in which she described what has transpired in Gaza as a genocide, a characterization that has been the subject of fierce debate through the war.

“The genocide in Gaza impacts us all,” Chow said, adding “our common bond of shared humanity is tested. And I will speak out when children anywhere are feeling pain and violence and hunger.”

By the numbers: Here’s what needs to happen in a budget vote to avoid an election

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government was elected just a few seats shy of a majority, meaning the Liberals will need the co-operation of one of the opposition parties to pass their budget.

The budget is considered a confidence vote, meaning the government will fall if it fails to pass and Canada would be heading for a second election this year.

While the Liberals gained an extra vote on the same day the budget dropped, — via former Conservative MP Chris d’Entremont crossing the floor — the Liberals are still a couple votes short of a majority in the House.
