PARIS—A coalition of leftist parties won the most seats in France’s parliamentary elections, according to projections based on early ballot counts, in a stunning come-from-behind victory fueled by a groundswell of opposition to Marine Le Pen’s anti-immigrant forces.
A projection by polling firm Elabe estimated that the New Popular Front—a coalition of parties that includes socialists, greens and far-left France Unbowed—is expected to garner between 175 and 205 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly. The party of President Emmanuel Macron and its allies won between 150 and 175, according to Elabe, while Le Pen’s National Rally and its allies finished between 115 and 150 seats.

Remi Laboucane says memories of being bullied were finally fading, memories so awful he switched schools.
He was graduating from high school this summer, ready for life’s next chapter, when he opened his yearbook to see that he and other transgender students at Foothills Composite High School in Okotoks, Alta., had been deadnamed.
“It was just a nightmare,” the 18-year-old said in an interview.

After Google picked an organization to help decide how $100 million in funds will be distributed among Canadian news outlets, the organization’s independent board director recently expressed regret over sharing apparently antisemitic posts online in a statement to the National Post.
“I acknowledge that some of the content I reshared on social media adds to the pain of Jewish communities and I apologize for that unreservedly,” said Sadia Zaman. She was appointed independent board director of the Canadian Journalism Collective (CJC) earlier in June to distribute $100 million annually to Canadian journalism organizations.

Temporary residents and recent immigrants are driving up Canada’s unemployment rate, as record numbers of newcomers welcomed to the country to fill labor shortages are now struggling to find work.
The unemployment rate for temporary residents – including foreign workers, international students and asylum seekers – was 11% in June, according to Bloomberg calculations. Using comparable data, the unemployment rate for all workers was just 6.2% last month.
