On Tuesday afternoon, CNN and MS NOW swooned over King Charles III’s speech to a Joint Session of Congress, choosing not to focus on the historical lessons and shared values that kept the West alive (although its current state is debatable), but on the moments regarding climate change, checks and balances, NATO, and Ukraine to name a few the left has declared outright jabs at President Trump.

King Charles III’s visit to the US was meant to be a celebration – of America’s 250th anniversary, of enduring Anglo-American ties and of the “special relationship”. But it has also been billed as a rescue mission.

The current state of US-UK relations is strained – a reflection of British reluctance to fully back the joint US-Israeli war against Iran. So the King’s goal has been to ease those tensions with a royal charm offensive, most notably with his joint address to Congress on Tuesday afternoon.

There is some reason for hope. President Donald Trump has a notably mercurial personality. Warm relations can turn chilly in a flash. But the reverse is also true, and former antagonists can be rehabilitated, welcomed once again into the president’s good graces.

President Trump hailed “the two most exceptional nations the world has ever known” as he and First Lady Melania welcomed the Royal couple to the White House on Tuesday morning for the first full day of the state visit marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

King to defend ‘democratic values’ as US state visit begins

King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived in the US at the start of a four-day state visit – the first since Queen Elizabeth II’s visit in 2007.

They arrived at Andrews military airbase in Maryland before being greeted at the White House by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

Security is extremely tight after the shooting incident in Washington DC at an event attended by the president on Saturday.

King Charles will address the US Congress on Tuesday and it is expected that he will express sympathy over the attack.

WASHINGTON—King Charles III arrives in Washington on Monday to publicly celebrate 250 years since a nascent U.S. republic ousted his forebears, and privately ensure that a fraying trans-Atlantic relationship can cope with another two-plus years of President Trump.

The four day visit—billed as Charles’s most high-wire diplomatic act since coming to the throne—will include a speech to Congress, the first time a British monarch has spoken there since 1991, a private audience with Trump and state dinner in Washington, as well as trips to New York and Virginia.
