“Islamophobia”

On Monday, two teenagers killed three men at the San Diego Islamic Center, then killed themselves. What a pointless spasm of violence it was. It took a few days for The New York Times to flex their rhetorical muscles and blame conservatives.

On the top left of Thursday’s front page, the headline read: “Islamophobia Spreads Fast, As Does Fear: Mosque Attack Reflects Rise in Overt Hatred.”

A woman has passed out after she and her partner were lashed 100 times each for having sex outside of marriage under an Indonesian province’s draconian Sharia laws.

The woman, who was not identified, needed to be carried away after she was publicly caned in Banda Aceh, on the north end of Sumatra island, today.

There’s a phrase used a lot in journalism called the ‘top line’. When you’re pitching a story to an editor and it’s not quite landing, they’ll ask: ‘Yeah, but what’s the top line?’ What is this story really about? What’s the thing readers absolutely need to understand first? Often, that becomes the headline.
