Environmentalism is one of the peculiar obsessions of the elite. Rarely does a day go by without some A-list celeb regaling us with a tale of our impending doom, why we are to blame for it and what thing we need to stop consuming. From Emma Thompson jetting to London to preach at an Extinction Rebellion rally to Prince Harry’s telling refelection on Covid-19 – ‘it’s almost as though Mother Nature has sent us to our rooms for bad behaviour’ – it seems we can never escape from the green obsessions of our social betters.

Why should leftists bother to make recycling work when their real objective is reached merely by appearing to practice it?

Recycling is a leftist sacrament. It fulfills emotional needs for Democrats. They suffer deep-seated guilt from participating in a materialistic culture that they think results in widespread environmental harm. For them recycling serves as a kind of visible penance. Unfortunately, recycling leads to unintended consequences.

Grouches complain that a lot of fake holidays are created by companies, but Earth Day is actually a fake holiday created by a sharp Madison Avenue ad agency, and the name comes to us from the same guy who coined, “Timex: It takes a licking and keeps on ticking”.

The Earth takes a licking much better than Timex watches, but it’s the job of ad agencies to convince us that consumer products are permanent, while the world is ephemeral.
