TORONTO — Canada will continue to discuss with its partners a potential diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, a foreign affairs spokesperson says, amid the recent disappearance of Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai.
“Canada remains deeply disturbed by the troubling reports of human rights violations in China,” said Syrine Khoury, press secretary to Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly, in a statement to CTVNews.ca.
China obsesses over what the world thinks of it. Its rise to rival the US as the world’s greatest economic superpower includes a strong psychological element. China seeks not to be feared, but as having peaceful intentions. Looking at its use of “united front” tactics reveals how China’s messaging seeks to convince gullible people in the West that Chinese interests are really their interests, too. This is one example where Chinese communism borrows “Russian characteristics,” using the old Soviet tactic of “united front” groups that wittingly or not do their bidding.
President Biden on Wednesday released a statement mourning the more than 100,000 Americans who died last year from drug overdoses — without mentioning China’s leading role exporting fentanyl, which drove the 29 percent annual increase in deaths.

In a sternly worded Tuesday statement, the PRC’s Vancouver consulate said it will “firmly oppose any official tie” between Vancouver and Kaohsiung, a Taiwanese port city of roughly equivalent population . “There is only one China in the world,” it read , adding, “We hope that the government of Vancouver city will handle Taiwan-related issues prudently and properly.”

The government officials bashed the animal’s head with a crowbar after breaking in to the home in Shangrao in southeastern Jiangxi province on Friday, shocking video shows.
The corgi’s owner, named only as Fu, was undergoing compulsory quarantine in a nearby hotel at the time, even though she is negative for Covid and the dog was never even tested.
