The Liberals have heeded the age-old advice that governments should never set up public inquiries unless they know in advance what the findings will be.

Ministers provide few details to committee probing Liberals’ use of Emergencies Act

Justice Minister David Lametti repeatedly invoked cabinet confidentiality in his appearance before a special committee tasked with investigating the government’s use of the Emergencies Act.

Lametti was asked pointed questions Tuesday evening about federal consultations with provinces and others before declaring an emergency, and when the government received advice to revoke the declaration. On multiple occasions, he responded that he “would not betray cabinet confidence.”

Every extra dollar the federal government raises by increasing the personal income taxes of Canadians costs $2.86 in reduced economic activity, according to a new report by the Fraser Institute.

The study by the fiscally conservative think tank also found the decrease in economic activity when corporate income taxes are raised by $1, is $2.02.

Despite the highly publicized blockades at Ontario’s Ambassador Bridge and Coutts crossing in Alberta, cross-border trade in Ontario and Alberta was up 16 per cent in February, compared to the same month last year, according to data from Statistics Canada.

And while some businesses were impacted by the blockades, the trade figures also raise questions about the government’s use of the Emergencies Act – a decision, in part, justified by “threats to (Canada’s) economic security” brought about by the blockades.

So Justin used the Emergencies Act to crush a citizens protest on behalf of a few corporate cronies.

The Trudeau government keeps saying it won’t impose a home equity tax.

But money talks and some six-digit funding cheques are raising uncomfortable questions.

The UBC group Generation Squeeze is headed-up by Professor Paul Kershaw. His team released a CMHC-funded report in January that called for a surtax on the sale of primary residences in Canada.

OTTAWA – A national inquiry into the federal government’s use of the Emergencies Act to bring an end to the “Freedom Convoy” trucker protests and blockades has been launched, with a mandate to examine the circumstances that led to the use of the Act, and the measures taken through it to deal with the emergency situation.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has named Paul S. Rouleau to lead the “Public Order Emergency Commission,” which will have the better part of the next year to lead the independent public inquiry before having to present a final report to both the House of Commons and Senate within 360 days after the revocation of the emergency declaration.
