Woman Lost for 4 Days in Colorado Mountains Is Rescued

Gina Chase went camping with an organization that recommended participants fast and discouraged cellphones during a spiritual retreat, the authorities said.

A Canadian woman was rescued over the weekend after she got lost in the Colorado mountains for four days as part of a guided spiritual “quest,” according to a local sheriff’s department, which said that participants had been encouraged to fast and discouraged from bringing cellphones.

The woman, Gina Chase, 53, of Victoria, British Columbia, was camping near the San Miguel Mountains of Colorado with 10 others through the Animas Valley Institute, an organization based in Durango, Colo., that emphasizes the spiritual value of being alone in nature, the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post. Around 11 a.m. on Aug. 14, Ms. Chase embarked on a “solo journey” near Lone Cone Peak but was reported missing around 2 p.m. the next day after she did not return to camp, the sheriff’s office said.

Food bank temporarily turns people away after running out of food

Summer is a time when many people take a break, but a local food bank says they learned the hard way recently that hunger does not go on holiday.

The Salvation Army Food Bank in Brant County says it had to temporarily turn some people away from its Paris location because the shelves were empty.

They’ve since been restocked, but high demand means the supply may not last long.

The situation is more pronounced in the summer – a time of year where people don’t typically donate as often.

Montreal synagogue on Canada-wide list of threatened Jewish institutions

Montreal police (SPVM) says at least one synagogue in Montreal is on a list of more than 100 places of worship across Canada that received a threatening email Wednesday morning.

The force received a 911 call at 7:10 a.m. about the email, which was received at 5 a.m., and officers are currently onsite at Adath Israel Poale Zedek Anshei Ozeroff on Harrow Crescent in Hampstead.

Probably White Supremacists.

‘That’s wild’: Luxury condo for consul general in New York was not approved by Treasury Board

OTTAWA — The purchase of the new residence of Canada’s consul general in New York by Global Affairs Canada was not approved by the Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS) because it was just below the threshold that jumped to $10 million in 2022.

On Tuesday, senior public servants from TBS and Public Works were called to the first of three meetings of a House of Commons committee to explain the government’s recent decision to buy a $9-million luxury condo on Manhattan’s “Billionaire’s Row.”

In 2022, the federal government dramatically expanded the low-wage Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) stream, which predictably resulted in exploitative working conditions, surging youth unemployment, and stagnant wage growth. Trudeau’s inflation means you’re poorer than you think

You’re poorer than you think.

That’s the message from a Statistics Canada report that looked at the impact of inflation on after-tax family income. The report, issued Monday, showed that median after-tax family income in 2022 rose by 2.5% to $60,800.

The bad news is inflation wiped out that out, meaning families were worse off.

You would think a government that’s down 20 points might want to telegraph an aura of sanity, rather than spend its days finding new ways to eviscerate an immigration policy that has served Canada well since Lester Pearson led the Liberal party.

In a vacuum, some of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s changes might seem justified: whether it be the streamlined $7 electronic visas, or broadening refugee claims beyond the U.N.’s definition of those facing “persecution” to include accumulated “intersectional” experiences.

U.S. military announces $20M US grant to build cobalt refinery in Ontario

The U.S. military has made its largest move so far in a novel national-security effort to fund mining initiatives in Canada.

The Pentagon on Tuesday announced a $20 million US grant to create a cobalt refinery in northern Ontario’s Temiskaming Shores. The money will go to the Toronto-based Electra Battery Materials Corporation; the government of Canada is adding $3.6 million US ($4.9 million Cdn) of its own to the project.

OTTAWA – The legal team for “Freedom Convoy” organizer Tamara Lich says she wasn’t part of any conspiracy to break the law when she helped organize a massive protest against pandemic restrictions in Ottawa.

The Crown alleges Lich and another organizer, Chris Barber, were in cahoots to block roads and disrupt locals in a bid to pressure the federal government to drop COVID-19 vaccine mandates in 2022.

Our latest look at the federal political scene shows a particularly dominant Conservative Party, counting on the support of 40 per cent of decided voters across Canada (up two points since April). The Liberals are second with 25 per cent (down one point), followed by the NDP with 17 per cent (down three points), the Bloc Québécois with nine per cent (down one point), the Green Party with six per cent (up three points) and the People’s Party with two per cent (up one point).

Charter challenge launched against Ottawa for excluding mental illness from MAID

OTTAWA — A Charter challenge has been launched against the federal government over its decision not to allow those suffering solely from mental illness the ability to access an assisted-death.

On Monday, a statement of claim was issued at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice by Dying with Dignity Canada, a national charity that advocates for people’s right to access the procedure, along with two individuals diagnosed with mental disorders who say it has filled their life with suffering.

How long before conservative political beliefs are legislated as a mental illness requiring involuntary “euthanasia”.
