The Great British Brain-Drain

I am friends with a billionaire property developer who left Britain for good this year. He went to live in a European tax haven because he objects to this country’s 40 percent inheritance tax—one of the most punitive rates in the world. He was born and had lived in London all his life, but his business interests are now global; he no longer recognizes this city, and feels the current Labour government is hostile towards wealth creators. The nation will miss him and his ilk: He reckoned he was frequently one of the top 10 taxpayers in Britain. Overall, the top one percent of earners generate 29 percent of all income tax receipts.

For centuries, Britain and especially London have been a magnet for talent and capital from across the world. Historically the center of the British Empire, and latterly the only financial hub to rival New York, London was a truly global city—full of high earners, a cultural mecca, brilliantly connected to other centers of finance and industry.

Everyone Thinks Legal Weed is Inevitable. Everyone Is Wrong.

In next November’s elections, residents of Massachusetts will have the opportunity to do something strange and unprecedented: re-ban marijuana. The state legalized recreational pot in 2016. But last week, organizers submitted the requisite 74,000 signatures to place on the ballot an initiative that would end the legal sale of the drug without reimposing penalties for mere possession.

Children’s Aid Society knew women zip-tied boys into pyjamas but didn’t intervene, Ontario murder trial told

Becky Hamber, Brandy Cooney Killer Moms

The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) knew Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber were zip-tying two boys into one-piece pyjamas and their case worker didn’t tell them to stop, according to an email shown at the couple’s weeks-long murder trial in Milton, Ont.

Holly Simmons, their Halton CAS worker at the time, emailed the two prospective parents in July 2019 and acknowledged they used zip ties so the boys couldn’t take off their clothes, in order to control “urine” and for “safety.”

President Trump’s Farsighted Policy on Venezuela, Iran’s ‘Second Home’ in the Americas

Iran has recently come out publicly, voicing strong support for Venezuela against the United States. Its statement reflects a deep strategic and military relationship that serves multiple interests for Tehran. The Iranian regime openly views its partnership with Venezuela as a rare foothold in the Western Hemisphere, a staging ground for influence, and a safe haven for key figures and networks. The relationship encompasses military cooperation, intelligence sharing, support for proxy groups, and opportunities for illicit trade, all of which bolster Iran’s global reach while challenging U.S. interests.

Oh sure ….

She says — as Canadians face rising living costs, ongoing challenges in finding affordable housing, and increasing pressure on public services — refugees and newcomers have too often been unfairly cast as scapegoats for deeper systemic issues.

“We often focus on the demand side … and we don’t look enough at the supply side,” said Clark-Kazak. “People who are coming to this country are also trained as doctors, engineers and construction workers who could build housing.”

Met will not investigate claims against Andrew relating to Virginia Giuffre

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor will not be the subject of a criminal investigation in Britain over allegations he had sex in London with a teenager who was trafficked, and then put pressure on his police protection officer to dig up dirt on her.

The Metropolitan police on Saturday said after weeks of review, it would not launch any formal criminal investigation into King Charles’s brother. Mountbatten-Windsor’s ties to the convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein led to the stripping of his royal status.

An Ontario Superior Court justice repeatedly questioned the strength of evidence Friday against a Toronto-area lawyer facing extradition to the United States on charges tied to fugitive and alleged cocaine kingpin Ryan Wedding.

Margareta Dovgal: Liberals twisted themselves into pretzels over their own pipeline MOU

The plan isn’t designed to succeed

Playing politics with pipelines is a time-honored Canadian tradition. Tuesday’s events in the House of Commons offered a delightful twist on the genre.

The Conservatives introduced a motion quoting the Liberals’ own pipeline promises laid out in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Alberta, nearly verbatim. The Liberals, true to form, killed it 196–139 with enthusiastic help from the NDP, Bloc, and Greens.

Canadian hate speech law ‘would criminalise biblical passages’

Planned changes to Canada’s hate speech law would criminalise biblical passages, critics have claimed.

Under Canada’s criminal code, anyone found guilty of “wilful promotion of hatred” faces up to two years in jail.

But it also says that prosecution should not apply to a statement made in “good faith” and “based on belief in a religious text”.
