Thirty years ago, U.N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali offered an ambitious vision of the institution he led. The Cold War was over. Globalization was drawing countries together even as fragmentation threatened to pull them apart. The United Nations, he argued, could help build a more cooperative international order.
He was remarkably confident. Nations would be bound closer together, and the credibility of the U.N. would deepen “year by year.”

LNG Canada will once again use Chinese steel for the “specialized fabrication capability” it says it requires for its $33-billion Phase 2 expansion project in Kitimat, B.C.
When the proposed expansion led the list of early projects referred to the new federal Major Projects Office in September 2025, Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters these ambitious building projects would be “at the heart of our new, comprehensive Buy Canadian policy.”
In fact, the joint venture will buy more components from the state-owned China Offshore Oil Engineering Co., Ltd. (COOEC), which also manufactured its first two liquified natural gas processing units, known as trains, now in operation.

Top lawyers, doctors and members of the faith community are calling for a moratorium on the US death penalty after Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute Christa Pike left the prisoner alive but in critical condition and receiving life-saving medical care.
The recent spate of harrowingly botched executions across US death penalty states reached a new low late on Wednesday when Tennessee’s governor Bill Lee called off the procedure after Pike had been injected with two full syringes of pentobarbital. She is the only person to have survived being administered 5mg of the sedative – a massive dose that under normal circumstances is considered fatal.
She received TWO lethal injections. Should she be granted clemency? I say yes though her crime was horrific.
Sooke brewery owner terminated after ‘Show Me the Evidence’ shirt sparks backlash on Truth and Reconciliation Day
A Sooke brewery has closed temporarily and fired one of its owners after a photograph appearing to show him wearing a “Show Me the Evidence” T-shirt on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation sparked widespread backlash online.
Sooke Brewing Company initially acknowledged the photograph in a social media statement, saying the shirt’s message was inconsistent with what the business stands for.

She was on her second day of blocking the school entrance along with hundreds of others, ensuring all lessons were cancelled. “We just want to be listened to by the government. We’d rather stand here doing this than have to learn in poor conditions. It’s the only way to make ourselves heard.”

Now, at a parole board hearing held in private because the thought of a public hearing caused Islam ‘anxiety’, it was recommended that he should be moved to an open prison.
