A leading higher education trade union in Britain has drawn criticism after supporting so-called trans-racialism, in which people can self-identify as another race.
Last week, the Edinburgh branch of the University and College Union (UCU) wrote on social media to reassert its position in favour of “trans inclusion”, saying that “liberation cannot be built on exclusion”.

US leads Bitcoin mining as China ban takes effect
China’s share of global Bitcoin mining has fallen to effectively zero, research by the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index (CBECI) suggests.
In June China told banks to stop facilitating transactions, and issued bans on mining.
At its peak in Sept 2019 China accounted for over three quarters of all Bitcoin mining.
China’s crackdown initially led to a 38% fall in mining globally CBECI said.

The announcement, which came into effect Friday at midnight, means that large venues where proof of vaccination is required — including movie theatres, concert halls and arenas — can now fill every seat. Masks are recommended but are not required for patrons who are enjoying a cold beer or hot dog in the stands, perplexing many who say such venues are less safe than restaurants where patrons can also remove masks to eat and drink.

Sources inform TV 2 that the arrested man in Kongsberg is a Norwegian convert to Islam, who has had contact with the Norwegian health service several times.
A man has been arrested after injuring and killing multiple people with a bow and arrow and multiple areas have been evacuated in Norway, and police say it is too early to tell whether the attacks were terror-related.
An exact count of the number of injured or dead from Wednesday’s incident has not yet been released. There is no suspicion that anyone else was involved.
Quebec delays vaccine mandate for health-care workers by one month, fearing staffing crisis
After weeks of insisting Quebec would go ahead and impose a vaccination mandate for health-care workers and suspend those who don’t comply without pay, the province’s health minister, Christian Dubé, has backtracked and is now giving them an extra month to get adequately vaccinated.
Health-care workers now have until Nov. 15 to get the necessary shots. The original deadline was this Friday.
Most Canadians believe Facebook harms their mental health: survey
OTTAWA – A broad swath of Canadians has a sour view of Facebook, with half of respondents to a new poll saying it should be regulated or broken up as a “corporate image” crisis rocks the social media giant yet again.
Forty per cent of those who responded to an online survey by Leger and the Association for Canadian Studies said they had a negative opinion of the company.
The vast majority also agreed that Facebook amplifies hate speech, helps spread fake news, damages individuals’ mental health and poses a risk to children and teenagers.
Catholic Troops Can Refuse COVID Vaccine, Archbishop Declares
Catholic U.S. troops should be allowed to refuse the COVID-19 vaccine based solely on conscientious objection and regardless of whether abortion-related tissue was used in its creation or testing, the archbishop for the military declared in a new statement supporting service members who are seeking religious exemptions.
“No one should be forced to receive a COVID-19 vaccine if it would violate the sanctity of his or her conscience,” said Archbishop for the Military Services Timothy P. Broglio, in a statement released Tuesday.
Muslim foreign ministers to make women’s rights plea to Taliban
Foreign ministers from several Muslim-majority countries are planning to go to Kabul in part to urge the Taliban to recognise that the exclusion of women and girls from education is a distortion of the Islamic faith.
The proposal has the support of western diplomats, who recognise that calls from them concerning universal values are going to have less traction with the Taliban than if the request comes from leaders of largely Islamic states.
