Army War College suggests ‘Broken Nest’ strategy for deterring a Chinese invasion of Taiwan

“I’ve written before about China’s increasingly brazen indications that it plans to force a “reunification” with Taiwan sometime in the not-so-distant future. For its part, Taiwan is clearly worried about the possibility China could overwhelm its defenses but remains defiant. The US has been selling Taiwan arms, sending warships through the Taiwan strait  and even training Taiwanese troops. All of it raises the possibility of a real confrontation over Taiwan, one that could be extremely costly to both China and the US.

Would Taiwan agree to a scorched earth policy?

Biden Slouches towards Catastrophe in Ukraine

The White House is writing off an ally to appease an enemy.

The situation in Ukraine has become very grave.

On December 17, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin sent U.S. president Joe Biden an ultimatum, effectively demanding that NATO abandon Eastern Europe or face military action. Biden agreed to a phone conversation with Putin to talk it over, giving the Kremlin what it sought: The affected countries were now on the table instead of at the table. When the two then talked on December 30, according to the White House, Biden rejected the ultimatum and informed Putin that if he proceeded to invade Ukraine, he would face strong economic sanctions from the U.S. and its European partners. Putin then countered by saying that such sanctions would result in a “complete rupture in relations” between Russia and the U.S.

This is not a surprise. Ukraine or Taiwan, who will be first?

LGBTQ movement is losing trans-athlete debate: Transgender Law Center

UPenn swimmer Lia Thomas may be smashing records and winning races against women, but LGBTQ advocates say the transgender-athlete issue is a loser.

A Transgender Law Center “messaging guide” posted online last month found that no matter how the issue was framed, “no arguments we tested bested the opposition in a direct debate on sports policy.”

MRU fires professor who espoused benefits of residential schools and criticized BLM movement

MRU fires professor who espoused benefits of residential schools and criticized BLM movement

A tenured Calgary professor who made headlines in 2020 for criticizing the Black Lives Matter movement and espousing the educational benefits of residential schools confirmed Tuesday she has been fired.

Frances Widdowson had been an associate professor at Mount Royal University in the department of economics, justice and policy studies since 2008.

She gained notoriety in 2020, when she said the Black Lives Matter movement had “destroyed” the university, that residential schools gave Indigenous children an education that “normally they wouldn’t have received,” and that tens of MRU faculty members had opposed her.

John Ivison: Trudeau and other partisans should rein in the rage

Trudeau’s ‘misogynists and racists’ outburst is ever more typical of the illiberal left — and of his government in particular

The sight of a man in his 50s flashing his (Ed. Culturally appropriated!) Haida raven tattoo as he received his booster was a timely reminder that Tuesday was the first day that over-55s could get the shot in Quebec.

Trudeau says Canadians are ‘angry’ and ‘frustrated’ with the unvaccinated

With the Omicron-driven pandemic wave sweeping the country, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canadians are growing more angry and frustrated with people who still refuse to get vaccinated.

Trudeau said that while most Canadians have stepped up to get their shots — putting Canada near the top of the list of countries with the highest vaccination rates — the unvaccinated remain a problem.

What vegan propaganda ignores

Cutting out animal products will kill us, not save us

Curious how acceptable veganism has become. George Orwell scathingly described vegetarians as “that dreary tribe of high-minded women and sandal-wearers and bearded fruit-juice drinkers who come flocking to the smell of ‘progress’ like bluebottles to a dead cat.” Somehow, via Linda McCartney’s textured soya sausages, veganism has become a mainstream path, not just to health, but to a bright future. As George Monbiot, the high priest of British veganism, exhorted his Guardian readers, “The best way to save the planet? Drop meat and dairy.” It’s the cows. They belch methane.

Iran’s “Nuclear Blackmail”: Iran Has No Interest in Negotiating a New Nuclear Deal

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid’s observation that Iran is engaging in “nuclear blackmail” with Western negotiators provides a damning indictment of the current state of play regarding the negotiations being held in Vienna on Tehran’s nuclear activities.

With Western intelligence agencies warning that Iran could be just weeks away from producing the weapons grade uranium required to build nuclear warheads, there is mounting concern over progress being made at the Vienna talks, which are trying to revive the flawed 2015 deal agreed by the Obama administration.

I suspect Israel will act alone.

FBI is STILL hunting for 350 Capitol rioters one year later

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is still hunting 350 people involved in the deadly siege of the Capitol a year ago.

The agency are still seeking to identify 250 people seen on video assaulting Capitol police, including a man who appears to have used an electric prod disguised as a cane on a cop, after the riot. Another 100 have been identified but not yet apprehended for multiple crimes tied to January 6.

The investigation has been a massive undertaking for federal law enforcement who have charged more than 700 people.

Prince Andrew: Duke’s disastrous interview answers are critical to sex assault case

It is more than two years since I sat down with Prince Andrew in a Buckingham Palace ballroom and posed questions that seemed almost too surreal to ask.

It is two years since the world heard his defence – about a birthday party in Woking, a trip to Pizza Express, and his inability to sweat – and shook a collective head, trying to work out what any of it meant. At the time, the specifics seemed almost comical. They spawned memes and riffs, quiz-show questions and stand-up routines. But now, suddenly, they feel deadly serious.
