The saying goes that crises reveal your true nature. If that’s the case, we are in big trouble, because what COVID has revealed about young people in America is not good.
A new Morning Consult poll out this week finds that young people are the most worried about getting COVID of any age group — even though their risk from the disease is negligible.
At the other end of the spectrum, the elderly are much less worried, even though they are at the highest risk of death.
“Everything we do over the internet today,” says Harri Owen, chief strategy officer at the company PostQuantum, “from buying things online, banking transactions, social media interactions, everything we do is encrypted.
“But once a functioning quantum computer appears that will be able to break that encryption… it can almost instantly create the ability for whoever’s developed it to clear bank accounts, to completely shut down government defence systems – Bitcoin wallets will be drained.”
Greenbelt, Maryland – A federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging Muhammad Luqman Rana, age 32, of City of Vaughan, Ontario, for the federal charges of production of child pornography and extortion by threat to injure the reputation of another. The indictment was returned on December 11, 2019 and unsealed yesterday upon his extradition from Canada.
League’s first Muslim player didn’t want to wear jumper on religious grounds but is said to have support and respect of teammates
GWS Giants midfielder Haneen Zreika will sit out the club’s AFLW clash with the Western Bulldogs after deciding she could not wear the new pride jumper due to her faith.
Zreika, 22, grew up in Western Sydney and was the first Muslim AFLW player when she debuted in 2019, coming to Australian rules football from a rugby league background.
Now imagine if it were a Christian girl.
The U.S. Navy is pausing SEAL training at Washington state parks while a legal battle over their use winds its way through the courts.
“It is difficult to find peace in the woods when armed frogmen might be lurking behind every tree,” lawyers for the Whidbey Environmental Action Network, the group behind the lawsuit against the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, argued in a legal brief filed last month.
Someone needs a kick in the ass.
A bizarre race against time is under way for the US Navy to reach one of its downed fighter jets – before the Chinese get there first.
The $100m F35-C plane came down in the South China Sea after what the Navy describes as a “mishap” during take-off from the USS Carl Vinson.
The jet is the Navy’s newest, and crammed with classified equipment – and, as it is in international waters, is technically fair game.
Whoever gets there first, wins.
An Ontario doctor prohibited from prescribing ivermectin to treat COVID-19 has launched a telehealth service offering the unapproved treatment to Ontarians to treat the virus, Global News can reveal.
Dr Patrick Phillips, a family doctor who is the subject of several investigations by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), is the director of a new telehealth service based in Ontario that is offering ivermectin, an antiparasitic treatment not approved by Health Canada to treat COVID-19.
Germany and the US have warned they could target a key Russian gas pipeline if the country invades Ukraine.
A US state department spokesman said the Nord Stream 2 pipeline “will not move forward” if Russia were to attack.
The controversial energy project is designed to double gas flow and runs from Russia direct to Germany under the Baltic Sea.
It circumvents Ukraine, which relies on existing pipelines for income and is under threat from Russian forces.
Canada has come off badly again in Transparency International’s annual Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), with the country’s score falling faster than any other in the 180-country rankings, which were released this week. Canada’s score has dropped to its lowest ever — 74 out of 100 — a slide that has cost Canada eight points over the past five years alone.
China’s state-run Global Times published a summary of an interview with former President George W. Bush on Wednesday to discourage calls for a boycott of the upcoming 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
A group of German, Austrian and Swiss immigrants has implanted an ideologically driven settlement in one of the country’s poorest regions
A 1,600-hectare (4,000-acre) gated community, dubbed El Paraíso Verde, or The Green Paradise, is being carved out of the fertile red earth of Caazapá, one of Paraguay’s poorest regions.
The community’s population – consisting mainly of German, Austrian and Swiss immigrants – will eventually swell from 150 to 3,000, according to the owners.
Gerry Butts, like the Head & Shoulders guy in the television commercials, seems to be “never not working.”
The best friend and former principal secretary to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (tossed out during the SNC-Lavalin tussle with Jody Wilson-Raybould), couldn’t stay out of the truckers’ protest, so he took a run at Medicine Hat’s Tamara Lich in an attempt to cast doubt on the integrity of Convoy For Freedom 2022.
OTTAWA — An intelligence expert said the federal government’s decision not to conduct a formal national security review on the takeover of a Canadian lithium mining company by a Chinese state-owned company was a “mistake.”
The government misjudged the takeover’s significance to Canada’s economic and national security both in the present and future, said Wesley Wark, a visiting professor at the University of Ottawa who specializes in international affairs and intelligence gathering.
“The kinds of explanations that have been offered by the government to date I find wholly unsatisfactory and very narrowly focused,” he told a House of Commons committee Wednesday.
Erin O’Toole faced restive MPs and grassroots questions about his leadership on the first day of a Conservative caucus retreat — and worse could be yet to come Thursday when MPs are presented with a long-awaited post mortem on the party’s election loss.
Wednesday marked the first time O’Toole has met with his team this year as he continues dealing with calls for his leadership to be reviewed and some in caucus questioning his ability to even do the job.
The freshly scrubbed of all things ‘icky conservative’ party is living its best life with O’Toole as leader. It makes no sense to replace him just as it makes no sense to vote for the CPC if you are a conservative. Find a new home.
CanSino-McMaster deal may turn out to be ‘case study of what not to do in partnerships with China’: expert
The federal government has trumpeted previous vaccine partnerships with a China-based company as one of the reasons why Canada was pinning its hopes on a COVID-19 vaccine candidate from China early in the pandemic.
But The Fifth Estate has reviewed those partnerships and found that a collaboration with McMaster University in Hamilton stalled years ago and never resulted in an approved vaccine anywhere in the world.
… After the deal fell apart, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters that the reason Canada partnered with CanSino was because of the “well-established partnership” between scientists in Canada and China “that has been effective in the past.”
