Be Very Suspicious of the ‘Put the Brakes on AI’ Crowd

This is probably a take on the AI-will-kill-us-all debate that you haven’t seen. If it isn’t, let me commend you for the quality of your social media feed and/or your internet-surfing habits. But if you’re a regular reader of The American Spectator, you’ve hopefully picked up enough knowledge to be very skeptical of a classic information operation, and you recognized something fishy in the spectacle put on by the AI companies last week and over the weekend.

How worried should Canada be about Trump’s U.S.-Venezuela oil deal?

How worried should Canada be about Trump’s U.S.-Venezuela oil deal?

U.S. President Donald Trump announced what he called “the biggest oil deal in world history” with Venezuela on Aug. 28. Two days later, on Truth Social, he posted that “Trump’s historic oil deal with Venezuela realigns global energy and puts OPEC, Canada on notice.”

What does Venezuelan oil have to do with Canada, and should we be worried? The short answer is maybe; a little bit. The long answer is below.

Blaming America in the Shadow of 9/11

Blaming America in the Shadow of 9/11

Columbia University and the Knight First Amendment Institute kicked off the first night of last week’s symposium on the War on Terror and free speech with a video. Opening with images of newspaper headlines boldly naming the attacks as acts of terror, the video acknowledged 9/11 as “the deadliest attack in United States history.”

But the video did not explicitly blame al-Qaeda for the attacks. That duty fell to President George W. Bush, who, in the video, tells a September 20, 2001, joint session of Congress that “our war on terror begins with al-Qaeda, but it does not end there.”

Zelenskyy’s comparison of Canada to Ukraine is imperfect — but it matters

Zelenskyy’s comparison of Canada to Ukraine is imperfect — but it matters

There was something extraordinarily refreshing about listening to Volodymyr Zelenskyy say the quiet part out loud.

Asked to comment on the deteriorating relationship between Canada and the United States, the Ukrainian president described it as “strange” and “very dangerous” before drawing — arguably — an imperfect comparison with his country and Russia.

Both countries are run by anti-democratic grifters to start with.

China’s Proxy Conflicts: Is World War III Upon Us?

China’s Proxy Conflicts: Is World War III Upon Us?

“No, we are not on the eve of World War III,” writes Leon Hadar in Asia Times.

“What’s actually happening in 2026 is not the slow ignition of a single global war,” he adds. “It’s the slow unwinding of the postwar America-led order, playing out simultaneously in half a dozen theaters that don’t yet cohere into one fight.”

Whether Hadar is correct or not, a friend mentioned in June that “the world is all out of control.”

There are costs for Mark Carney’s closer ties with Europe

There are costs for Mark Carney’s closer ties with Europe

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cozying up to the European Union has been cast as a bid to control Canada’s destiny in a rapidly changing world.

But several countries that already have close ties to the EU have cited the desire for control and sovereignty as a reason to ultimately reject deeper integration or full-fledged membership in the 27-country bloc.

Most recently, in late August, voters in Iceland rejected a referendum question about restarting talks to formally join the EU.

Sunny Hostin Claims Hollywood Is Racist Against Her, Won’t Adapt Her Smut Books

Over their hiatus, it was announced that The View co-host Sunny Hostin has sold her likeness and the rights to smut books to be produced into a series of movies by a film company that utilizes A.I. On Friday’s episode, the ABC News co-host defended her actions by claiming Hollywood was “gatekeeping” her because they were racist, and suggested that black and brown people were not being hired for projects. However, her co-hosts pointed out the hypocrisy that by using fake people in her adaptations, she was keeping those same black and brown people from getting work.

“The Canada Border Services Agency continues to take action against individuals with suspected links to extortion activities, working with law enforcement partners across Canada to identify, investigate, and remove those who are inadmissible under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act,” the agency said in a news release Monday.

Ilhan Omar Has Been Cleared of Misconduct Accusations, but Something Doesn’t Add Up

Sometimes things just don’t make sense. Especially when someone like Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) is concerned.

She’s been a controversial figure in the past, especially when it came to her “Somalia first” statements that she’s made – something that doesn’t reflect well on someone of her stature. But it’s her most recent case surrounding a mysterious increase in funds that I feel needs a bit more attention – especially considering the result.

Carney invited ChiCom Pals To “Investor Summit”

Several Chinese state-backed investors are taking part in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Canada Investment Summit, another sign of warming relations with Beijing after years of Ottawa publicly spurning money from China.

The Prime Minister’s Office said Monday that, like everyone else, Chinese investors will be subject to federal rules governing foreign investment in this country.

Both China International Capital Corp. (CICC) and China Investment Corp. − China’s sovereign wealth fund − are attending Mr. Carney’s summit. CICC is roughly 40-per-cent owned by Central Huijin Investment, a subsidiary of China Investment Corp.

Notorious Ecuadorian crime gang designated a terrorist group by US

The US has designated Ecuador’s Los Tiguerones gang, which stormed a television station during a live broadcast in 2024, as a terrorist organisation as the Trump administration expands its campaign against narcotics traffickers it says are destabilising Latin America.

The US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, made the announcement in Quito, where he met Ecuadorian president Daniel Noboa, one of several rightwing allies of Donald Trump whom Rubio is courting as a security partner during a three-nation tour through Latin America that began on Tuesday.

Peter Menzies: Ottawa’s Quiet Embrace of the Chinese Regime Is Alarming

Peter Menzies: Ottawa’s Quiet Embrace of the Chinese Regime Is Alarming

The most alarming aspect of Canada’s strategic partnership with China is how sneaky it has become.

It was considered a great coup in January when, as part of his circumnavigation of the globe culminating in his now famous Davos speech, Prime Minister Mark Carney travelled to Beijing to announce a “new strategic partnership” with Chinese leader Xi’s regime.
