‘Act of sabotage’ as Ukraine hints at secret bombings behind enemy lines in Crimea

Elite special forces reported to be behind fireball blast at ammunition dump in Russian occupied territory

Ukrainian special forces are reported to be behind a series of mysterious explosions behind enemy lines in occupied Crimea.

Blasts at an open-air ammunition dump and an electrical substation in the north of the Russian-held peninsula were the work of an elite military unit, according to an anonymous Ukrainian official.

Footage shared on social media showed a huge fireball sent into the sky by the explosion at the ammunition dump, followed by secondary blasts as munitions cooked off.

Freeing of terrorist who killed Australian soldiers shows how the US gave Taliban leverage despite allies’ objections

Many of the Taliban freed under the Doha Agreement took up arms, providing a deadly illustration of how the US-Taliban deal undermined the viability of the Afghan republic.

Hekmatullah, a Taliban infiltrator serving as a sergeant in the Afghan National Army, was involved in a so-called “green on blue” turncoat attack that killed three Australian soldiers in Uruzgan in 2012.

Why is ArriveCan still mandatory, and what is Ottawa’s plan for the app?

OTTAWA – The glitch-prone app touted as an efficient border tool early in the pandemic has become a punching bag for critics who question its utility — but ArriveCan may be here to stay.

The government insists it’s a useful tool. Critics say it has outlived its use, if it ever had one.

Here’s a quick lowdown on what we currently know about it.

Putin revives Mother Heroine award for women who have ten children

President Putin has revived a Soviet-era award for women who have ten or more children as Russia faces a demographic crisis that has been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine.

Joseph Stalin established the “Mother Heroine” title in 1944 to encourage large families after the death of tens of millions of Soviet citizens during the Second World War. More than 400,000 women received the award before it was scrapped after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Road to war: U.S. struggled to convince allies, and Zelensky, of risk of invasion

On a sunny October morning, the nation’s top intelligence, military and diplomatic leaders filed into the Oval Office for an urgent meeting with President Biden. They arrived bearing a highly classified intelligence analysis, compiled from newly obtained satellite images, intercepted communications and human sources, that amounted to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war plans for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Atlantic changed headlines multiple times in response to massive backlash over an op-ed that compared the Catholic rosary to an “assault weapon.”

Authored by Daniel Panneton, the article, originally titled, “How the Rosary Became an Extremist Symbol,” featured a rosary that had bullet holes in place of beads and argued that the Catholic sacramental had become a tool of violent militants.

Asian Americans are buying guns in record numbers. What’s caused this surge?

More than 5 million people became first-time owners during the pandemic as gun sales to the community rose by about 43%

Vivian Moon, a real estate agent and artist, had never felt particularly afraid as a woman living alone in Buena Park, a small California city outside Los Angeles. But when violent attacks against Asian women and seniors increased across the US early last year, she became disillusioned with the police’s ability – and willingness – to protect people who looked like her.

So, like many other Americans of Asian descent, she decided to buy a gun. “I realized I have to take ownership of how I want to live my life,” said Moon, 33.

In the year since, Moon said she’s made an effort to reach out and teach her friends, many of whom are women of color, about gun safety. As a Korean woman who grew up in the 1990s, Moon is also inspired by the legacy of the Los Angeles uprising and the armed Korean immigrants who defended their businesses on rooftops when riots broke out in South Central. “Back then Korean Americans took a stand and took their safety into their own hands,” she said.

GUNTER: More stats showing Canada doesn’t have gun crime problem

I’m going to throw a lot of statistics at you in this column, but my purpose is simple: To show that Canada does not have a gun crime problem, at least not one that would warrant the kind of draconian gun controls the Trudeau government has brought in during the past two years, and is still bringing in.

Ottawa convoy intelligence report warned of ‘violent revenge’ after protest crackdown

Newly disclosed documents show federal intelligence officials warned decision-makers that the police dispersal of “Freedom Convoy” protesters in Ottawa last winter could prompt an “opportunistic attack” against a politician or symbol of government.

The Feb. 24 “threat highlight,” marked Secret/Canadian Eyes Only, also advised that extremist “influencers” would leverage the outcome of the protests for continued recruitment and propaganda, regardless of whether COVID-19 pandemic restrictions were relaxed.

High-ranking Mountie insists Lucki pressed him about releasing gun details after N.S. shooting

The high-ranking Nova Scotia RCMP officer at the centre of a controversy over possible political interference by RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki following the 2020 mass shooting is doubling down on his allegations.

RCMP Chief Supt. Darren Campbell told a House of Commons committee Tuesday that he recalls Lucki saying during an April 28, 2020 call that she was “sad and disappointed” that Campbell had not released details about the gunman’s weapons at a news conference.

Campbell told MPs that the commissioner also said she had “promised” the offices of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and then-Public Safety minister Bill Blair that those details would be released.

Liz Cheney: Trump arch-enemy ousted in Wyoming election

Voters in the US state of Wyoming have ousted congresswoman Liz Cheney, a rare Republican critic of former President Donald Trump, in a primary election.

She has been trounced by a relative political newcomer and Trump-backed candidate, Harriet Hageman.

Ms Cheney, 56, was one of only two members of her party to join the congressional committee investigating Mr Trump’s attempts to cling to power.

The three-term congresswoman was once a rising Republican star.

The Fall of Faucism and the Return of Common Sense

COVID-19 mitigation czar and mask scold Dr. Anthony Fauci recently bemoaned Americans’ increased reluctance to “adhere” to public health restrictions. Blaming “fatigue,” “political divisiveness,” and “social media misinformation and disinformation,” the good doctor seemed quite upset that Americans no longer readily comply with every policy recommendation coming from his office. Where officials command and citizens comply, however, “expert” opinion smothers personal choice. That is hardly the American way.
