Pierre Poilievre’s looming ascension to Tory leader has Liberals — and some Conservatives — wary about what comes next

OTTAWA — Although three weeks remain in the Conservative party’s leadership race, the talk in political circles has already shifted to what’s next.

Pierre Poilievre’s victory is being treated as a foregone conclusion by his rivals and allies alike. He has upwards of $5 million in the bank, more than 300,000 party members signed up behind his cause, and the crowds turning up at get-out-the-vote events are assuaging earlier fears that all of the new members he’s recruited wouldn’t turn out to vote.

I think it’s almost 48 hours since the last Poilievre hit piece, if so that would be a new record.

Aug 20 (Reuters) – Russia’s defence ministry accused Ukraine on Saturday of poisoning some of its servicemen in the Russian-controlled part of Ukraine’s southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia in late July.

An adviser to Ukraine’s interior ministry said in response that the alleged poisoning could have been caused by Russian forces eating expired canned meat.

China’s record youth unemployment is a gathering storm for Xi Jinping

A thriving economy blunted desire for political change among the young, but now rampant joblessness has smashed that unofficial pact

They were supposed to be China’s trailblazers — the most educated generation in the country’s history, the foot soldiers building Xi Jinping’s “Chinese Dream” of a strong and prosperous country. Instead, almost one in five young Chinese are jobless. There is little prospect of that improving any time soon, with unpredictable and potentially dangerous consequences for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Where Did Wokeness Come From?

Evaluating the theories

Wokeness, most observers would agree, can be defined as the progressive worldview that views all racial and sexual disparities as proof of discrimination, and rejects liberal procedural traditions in favor of a totalizing politics that seeks to dismantle those disparities and silence dissenters. But nobody seems to agree on where it came from. Is wokeness an intellectual, religious, psychological, economic, legal, or institutional phenomenon? Its emergence over the last decade or so has been attributed to everything from academic intellectual trends, declining religiosity, victimhood psychology, corporate self-interest, white-collar class interests, the civil rights laws of the 1960s, and the copycat tendencies of large organizations. These all seem to have some explanatory power, but none seems on its own to account for the phenomenon fully. Let’s consider each in turn.

Have Western Sanctions Against Russia Failed?

Russia’s economy shrank by 4 percent year-on-year over the second quarter, according to data published by Russian federal statistics service Rosstat. The plunge, though significant in absolute terms, was not as drastic as expected by Russian and some Western observers. “June data suggests the contraction in the Russian economy seems to have bottomed out as the situation in some industries is stabilizing,” Sergey Konygin, an economist at Sinara Investment Bank, told Reuters.

Do dogs in San Francisco get stoned from eating human poop?

I came across this thread today on Twitter. The author, Michelle Tandler, is a former resident of San Francisco who has since moved to New York. She still posts tweets critical of San Francisco fairly often and one thread in particular caught the attention of a journalist at the San Francisco Examiner who was apparently working on a story about anti-San Francisco social media accounts.

Former President Donald Trump has mocked outgoing CNN media pundit Brian Stelter.

Trump celebrated the news Stelter is leaving the left-leaning network, with his last episode of Reliable Sources set to air this weekend. “Brian Stelter of Fake News CNN got fired because he lied, and lied, and lied — ABOUT ME,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “May he REST IN PEACE!”

Mexico Arrests Top Prosecutor in Case of Missing Students and Issues 80 Warrants

MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s former attorney general was arrested Friday in connection with the violent abduction and likely massacre of 43 students in 2014, a significant breakthrough in one of the most notorious atrocities in modern Mexican history.

He is the first high-level official to be detained in connection to the case, and the authorities said Friday that they had also issued more than 80 arrest warrants related to it, including for military officers, police officers and cartel members.

It was not immediately clear if any of those warrants had led to other arrests, but their sudden announcement came just a day after the Mexican government said an official inquiry had found the disappearance of the students to be a “crime of the state” involving every layer of government.

Democrat Golden Boy Daniel Ortega Turns Nicaragua Into Another Cuba

Another shining example of a Hollywood fave doing Communism right!

“This (The FBI raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago) is what happens in places like Nicaragua,” said Sen. Marco Rubio last week, “where, last year, every single person who ran against Daniel Ortega for President, every single person who put their name on the ballot, was arrested and is still in jail.”

GUNTER: Political interference should cost commissioner her job

RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki has to go.

Her willingness to potentially jeopardize the criminal investigation into the worst mass killing in Canadian history, just so she could help the Trudeau government push its gun-control agenda, has so compromised her professionalism that she can no longer be trusted to run our national law enforcement agency impartially.

Rex Murphy: A foul-mouthed ‘anti-racist’ worthy of the Liberal government

Even people like myself who, occasionally, criticize the present government are united in praise of their unquestioned strengths and virtues. On some things they are really good. Efficiency, for example. Once they decide to overlook something, it’s overlooked. They waste no time whatsoever on second thoughts.
