‘Despicable’ and ‘abhorrent’: Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson testifies at Emergencies Act inquiry

The behaviour from the so-called “Freedom Convoy” protesters in February was “despicable” and “abhorrent,” Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson told the Emergencies Act inquiry on Tuesday.

Watson is spending the day providing his long-awaited testimony on municipal efforts to handle the three-week demonstration, after his chief of staff and Ottawa’s city manager appeared Monday.

“We had some people dancing on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We had other people urinating at Cenotaph. We had a group that went and stole meals from the (homeless shelter) Shepherds of Good Hope,” Watson said.

Freeland apologizes for saying Africans must be ‘prepared to die for their democracy’ … makes pathetic ass of herself doing so

“If a white western person has offended someone, the first answer is to say, ‘I really didn’t mean to offend you.’”

Her initial comment was fine, her patronizing “apology” was racist.

There’s no bullshit quite like White Liberal Woman Bullshit.

‘This is an emergency’: David Suzuki addresses profanity-laden climate rant

The Canadian government’s baby steps toward addressing the climate crisis are “embarrassing,” famed environmentalist David Suzuki said Monday while expanding on the profanity-laden criticism he launched during a federal announcement last week.

“We are the only one of the G7 nations that hasn’t reduced our greenhouse gas emissions below 1990 levels,” Suzuki told CTV News Channel’s Power Play.

Images emerge of mangled Nord Stream: 165ft of blown-up Baltic Sea gas pipe is ‘either missing or buried under the seabed’

Extraordinary first images of a mangled Nord Stream pipeline have emerged, three weeks after it was blown up ‘with extreme force’ in a suspected act of sabotage.

Footage, released on Tuesday, showed at least 165 feet of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline was destroyed or buried under the seabed, following an explosion on September 26 – assumed by many to have been a Russian attack.

Release of the images came as Danish police said ‘powerful explosions’ were behind damage to the two gas pipelines (Nord Stream 1 and 2) in the Danish part of the Baltic Sea. On October 6, Swedish investigators said their own initial investigations had come to a similar conclusion.

John Ivison: Emergencies Act inquiry uncovers government failure at every level

Anyone wondering why public trust in government has tanked should review the testimony of Ottawa’s city manager at the inquiry into the federal government’s use of emergency legislation last winter. Residents and businesses were casualties of almost encyclopedic misjudgments by police, the city, the province and the federal government.

Trust in government tanked long before the Convoy arrived on the scene. It was the symptom.

Four years after legalization, illegal cannabis market still thriving in Canada

While Canada marks four years of legal cannabis on Monday, industry observers are wondering why it’s taken so long for a legal, government-regulated weed marketplace to overtake the illicit market.

During the 2015 federal election campaign, cannabis legalization for the Trudeau Liberals was framed as a means to protect young people from an entrenched and dangerous criminal black market.

Abdullahi Ahmed Abdullahi directly funded “violent acts of terrorism,” including the kidnapping and killing of people in Syria, said U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman in a statement.

NDP ‘Greedflation’ motion calling for grocery pricing probe gets unanimous support from MPs

An NDP motion calling on the federal government to take steps to tackle “greedflation,” and investigate grocery chain profits, received unanimous support from MPs on Monday.

The motion called out grocery store giants for making “massive profits in the last year,” while the cost of groceries keeps rising. It also calls on the government to “recognize that corporate greed is a significant driver of inflation, and to take further action to support families during this cost-of-living crisis.”

I don’t like our corporate class for lots of reasons and I especially despise the grocery barons who conspired to literally steal bread from the mouths of children for 14 years.

No one went to jail because Canada is as corrupt as a Banana Republic.

Nothing will come of this NDP grand standing.

How a plan to end the convoy protest came together — and why it failed

Ottawa city manager Steve Kanellakos revealed new details Monday about a last-ditch agreement between police, protesters and politicians to move trucks out of residential areas and onto Wellington Street during last winter’s convoy protest in the capital — a deal that would ultimately fall apart just days before the federal government gave police special powers to end the occupation.

Kanellakos was testifying on the third day of the Public Order Emergency Commission, which was triggered when the Emergencies Act was invoked on Feb. 14.

President Xi can’t bank on young couples to bear China a healthier future

Ruling party highlights declining birthrate but potential parents are imbued with spirit of defiance

At one point during Shanghai’s long pandemic lockdown in the spring, police arrived on the doorstep of a young couple and ordered them to go to a quarantine facility for several days, even though neither of them was infected with the coronavirus.

The punishment for failing to comply would affect not only them but their future children and grandchildren, an officer said.

Calmly, the husband replied: “I am sorry, we are the last generation. Thank you.”

The Politicization of the Police

Last week, Caroline Farrow, a Catholic mother of five and UK director of CitizenGo, was arrested in her home for allegedly committing ‘malicious communications’ online  (she strenuously denies these allegations).

Farrow’s account of the arrest—supported by cell phone photos and statements—details heavy-handed police forcing their way into her home, seizing her electronic devices, searching her, and whisking her away in a police car, all in front of her children and without a search warrant. This account is shocking, but by no means unique.

Europe’s energy policy reversal an unintended consequence of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine

History may well judge Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine to be a great gift to Western civilization. That is not to say that Russia’s invasion of that sovereign country was not unwarranted and a crime against humanity. Clearly, it has been both of those things. But how is it that the West, and the rest of the world by extension, will benefit from Mr. Putin’s heinous acts? It is related to the law of unintended consequences, which I will simply define as the following: “for every act intended to produce a specific outcome, there is a set of one or more unintended consequences that result.”
