On Friday, in deciding the appeal of a part-Mi’kmaq man who brutally beat his Mi’kmaq girlfriend in the street, a majority of the Supreme Court of Canada declared that judges are now required to hear out what sentencing circles have to say in the sentencing of an Indigenous offender.

To no one’s surprise, activists almost immediately co-opted these demonstrations, taking advantage of the situation and organizing “fiery but not so peaceful” protests in the streets.

My wife and I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary in the United Kingdom (UK), otherwise known as Great Britain. We love London and the Cotswolds, the Channel coast and Devonshire, where both our families trace back their origins. But the hotel’s name comes from being only a block away from the Household Cavalry barracks and museum, which is a great place to watch the start or end of the famous changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.

The U.S. embassy posted a video Wednesday morning of remarks that Ambassador Pete Hoekstra made during a recent appearance on The Really Big Show.
In the video, Hoekstra says the U.S. government is “closely watching Canadian activities, because it appears that some of this — from our perspective, and the way that we view our elections — could be inferred to be election interference.”

As someone noted on social media, this story is a South Park episode. It’s also fitting that the woman at the center of this controversy supports James Talarico. According to numerous clips, the woman left notes on cars near her $1.5 million home, telling drivers not to park there. The home is reportedly near a Historically Black College and University. The woman, who was white, got confronted, got huffy, dropped the school’s reported 25 percent graduation rate, and now they’re besieged. This white couple bought their home in a black neighborhood in Austin, Texas.
Canada Doubles Down on Letting Indigenous Criminals Off Easy
In the United States, the law is the same for everyone, regardless of race — at least theoretically. But in Canada, there is a parallel justice system for the favored race: indigenous people.
Since 1999, judges have been asked to give more lenient sentences to indigenous people out of ideological concern for “Indigenous overincarceration.” In addition, indigenous people are offered “sentencing circles” specific to “Aboriginal offenders.” These “sentencing circles” consist of members of the indigenous community, including “Elders”; they make recommendations to a judge about what sentence a person should receive.
