Timothy Mason drives a pair of Honda Accords: One is a 2010 model with fewer than 40,000 miles that he uses for his daily commute in Massachusetts to his accounting job, the other a 2001 V-6 with more than 280,000 miles he uses for tough winter driving.

“Where’s the financial sense in a new car?” Mason, 41, says. “Better fuel mileage, maybe, but is it going to save me $800 plus per month?”

Mason is on the extreme side of something happening across the country: America’s cars are older than ever.

Black advocates call out Carney government for excluding them from diversity council

Advocates for Black Canadians say the Carney government is reinforcing the barriers they face by launching an inclusivity council that does not include any Black people.

They said the decision raises questions about the prime minister’s approach to tackling discrimination.

“We’re tired of being an afterthought, tired of having to raise our voices to be heard and seen fully,” said former MP Jean Augustine, the first Black woman elected to the House of Commons.

CIA officer who had millions in gold bars accused of creating fake spy program

The former senior CIA official found with more than $40 million worth of gold bars in his house allegedly created a fake, highly classified intelligence program that he used as a conduit to funnel millions of dollars for his personal use, according to people familiar with the criminal investigation.

David J. Rush, who was arrested last month and charged with one count of theft of public money, constructed what is known as a “special access program,” a sort of black box for the most secret intelligence operations, the people familiar with the investigation said. Even intelligence personnel with the highest security clearance cannot access an individual SAP, as they are known, without specific authorization.

The federal government is looking at expanding the military’s fighter fleet beyond its original plan for 88 jets, according to industry and government sources.
