Some socialists have discovered a convenient new defense for enjoying the spoils of capitalism while demanding its destruction.
Grace Ryan, a former organizer for Brad Lander’s congressional campaign and the daughter of the man behind a $10 million chocolate business, took to social media to defend herself, and fellow privileged Democratic Socialists of America members, for preaching redistribution from behind the comfort of family wealth. Her defense was to invoke the phrase “noblesse oblige,” a phrase rooted in the idea of voluntary generosity, as proof that she has an obligation to help usher in the golden age of socialism.
