IN THE wake of US Vice President JD Vance’s comments about the ‘invasion of migrants’ in Europe, we now have the US defence secretary Pete Hegseth likening recent sea arrivals in Europe to an ‘invasion’, warning that freedoms won in 1944 remain under threat.
Hegseth’s remarks were delivered at the American Colleville-sur-Mer cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach in Normandy during commemorations of the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings.
Late on Monday evening, a man in the Kinnaird Avenue area of North Belfast was the target of a brutal attempted murder. A circulating video of the event shows the attacker sitting atop his blood-soaked victim, apparently trying to behead the man. Several individuals attempted to wrestle the assailant off the victim, one using a hurling stick.

Yet another Ontario Provincial Police officer has been killed on Ontario roads in what has turned out to be a devastating day for the provincial service.
“This is every police and family member’s worst nightmare,” Ontario Provincial Police Association president David Sabatini said.

A social media famous dog was allegedly served up as a dish in a Chinese restaurant after being kidnapped from a farm and slaughtered.
Chinese travel influencer Guo and his eight-year-old Border Collie, Chutou, were internet stars and together they amassed more than 1.5 million followers on Douyin, the country’s version of TikTok.
The canine accompanied his owner for years on journeys across China, from camping trips on snowy mountains to deserts, often guarding him outside his tent at night.

The latest figures released by England’s Department for Education offer a glimpse into the country’s future, revealing how the British are slowly becoming a minority in their own country.
According to the data for the 2025–2026 school year, the proportion of pupils identified as white British has fallen below 60% for the first time, while the share of pupils from minority ethnic backgrounds has reached a record high of nearly 39%.

When Avi Lewis was elected leader of the New Democratic Party just over two months ago, he issued a boast that was almost Trumpian in its braggadocio.

But it turns out, he was right. A Liaison Strategies poll released on Monday had NDP support at 15 per cent, with the party leading among 18–34 year olds. To put that in context, the NDP won the support of 1.2-million voters in the 2025 election. If a vote were held tomorrow, with a similar turnout, at this level of polling, the party would win nearly three million votes.

Trump has said that he can “take Cuba anytime.” But if he expects a walkover like Venezuela, he should think again. While Cuba’s proximity to the U.S. and collapsed economy should make it an easier target, its totalitarian system better resembles that of Iran, whose resistance to U.S. military and economic pressures may be inspiring Cuba’s besieged communists to do the same and possibly coordinate their moves with the IRGC.
