Competition Bureau looking deeper into how Sobeys can control who sells food in your area

The Competition Bureau of Canada announced Monday that it is moving forward with its investigation into competition in the Canadian grocery store landscape.

The bureau said it obtained orders from the Federal Court requiring the parent company of Sobeys to produce documents and testimony for its investigation into property controls.

Property controls are legal agreements that can block competitors from setting up stores in certain places, limiting where a new grocery store can open.

In Canada having the right cronies will allow you to get away with almost anything.

England’s most patriotic street has defied a Green-run council that told them not to put up St George’s flags for the World Cup.

The residents of Torrington Avenue in Bristol have long been known for festooning their road with the flag during international football tournaments.

However, that tradition seemed to be in doubt this year when the Green-controlled council said residents would not be allowed to “fly flags on lampposts or railings or any public property” for “health and safety” reasons.

Tony Dyer, the council’s leader, warned that flags raised for the World Cup would be taken down and a spokesman for the authority said the flags were not “welcoming”.

Why has the English flag become so toxic?

Memory is a trickster, but I am quite sure that when I was growing up, in the Eighties and Nineties, it was extremely unusual to see individual houses flying the Union Jack or the St George’s Cross. You might see a few more during big football tournaments, especially on cars and vans, but it just didn’t happen, by and large. This was a noticeable difference not only from the United States, but also from several other European nations.
