U.S. Officials: Chinese Shipping Giant Uses Cargo Ships to Spy on Military Communications

China’s state-owned shipping giant COSCO has secretly equipped commercial vessels with sophisticated technology to collect military communications near the United States and other countries, according to senior Trump administration officials.

Two U.S. officials told Reuters that COSCO has maintained a decades-long intelligence relationship with Beijing, allowing China to collect communications signals from ships and aircraft operating across North America, Europe and Asia.

The equipment aboard COSCO vessels consists of “sophisticated signals intelligence collection” systems rather than ordinary communications hardware, the officials said.

My Superman one still fit me fine, and went with my attitude. And wearing the same costume as my kid brother was grounds for mockery in the neighborhood — a rich Havana suburb suitable for our mom’s Cuban royalty family, the Mestres. And this costume was drab — an olive shirt and pants, an ugly cap of the same color, and a stupid string black beard. I smelled a rat. And, boy, did history prove me right.

Bush, it was a multipronged effort on five continents to eradicate the networks that had inspired and supported the attacks of September 11, 2001, along with the jihadi Muslim extremist movement that had murdered not only nearly 3,000 people that day but thousands more around the world, including in Europe and Israel, over five decades.

By one (admittedly biased) estimate, calculated 20 years after the attacks, the war on terror had cost $8 trillion, including hundreds of billions spent to bring about regime change in Iraq and Afghanistan, where over 7,000 American military personnel lost their lives and 52,143 were maimed and injured.

We can’t know exactly why Ontario Superior Court Justice Heather McArthur decided on Thursday to uphold bail for a man accused of shooting up the U.S. Consulate in Toronto, but her reasons can’t make much sense. Perhaps she was compelled by some kind of sob story, or perhaps she convinced herself that whatever stern warning she gave against disobeying bail conditions would resonate with the alleged gun-for-hire. Who knows; that’s all covered by a publication ban.

New York law requires hairdressers to learn how to work with all hair types

As of 1 September, a new law in New York state requires hairdressers studying cosmetology to be trained to work with all hair types.

“This is about equal access to service,” assembly member Michaelle Solages, who sponsored the law, said in a statement earlier this year. “No New Yorker should ever walk into a salon and be turned away or receive substandard care because of their hair texture. Now, with the adoption of this legislation, they won’t have to.”

The law, signed by Kathy Hochul, New York’s governor, requires cosmetology and natural hair styling classes to include instruction on hair types from the kinkiest to the straightest. Additionally, the new training will require students to learn about hair and scalp properties, hair care and styling techniques associated with textured hair.

As Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. are set to take effect next week, many consumers are anxious about the impact of the surtaxes on affected items.

Experts like Ian Lee, an associate professor at Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business in Ottawa, said the federal government’s counter-tariffs will make American items pricier for Canadians.

“If they’re planning on buying them anyways, they should probably buy them before Sept. 8,” Lee said in a video interview with CTVNews.ca on Monday.
