French tradition of rose crown for ‘virtuous’ girls branded sexist

Louis XVIII couronne la rosière de Mittau

Every year, young women in southwestern France put on white dresses and prepare for an important vote: to be titled the most virtuous woman of their village.

The tradition of crowning an 18-year-old woman with white roses in recognition of her irreproachable conduct and moral character originated in the 19th century but is still practised in 45 French villages.

It is now at the centre of a row over alleged government “wokeism”. Mayors are furious that the culture ministry is refusing to back their demand for the tradition to be given Unesco world heritage status on the grounds that it contravenes the principle of gender equality.

Screw the ‘Cultureless Ministry’.

LILLEY: Carney’s budget as unsustainable as a Trudeau budget

Mark Carney’s first budget is every bit as unsustainable as the budgets of Justin Trudeau. That’s if we hold Carney to the same measuring stick that he used to criticize Trudeau’s budgets.

The current Liberal PM is fond of saying that the former Liberal prime minister increased program spending far too much, and now he’s doing just that.

King Charles officially strips Andrew of HRH style and prince title

King Charles has officially stripped the former Duke of York, now Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, of his HRH style and his prince title.

Charles formally made the changes, which were announced a week ago, by issuing a letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm, which the Crown Office published in the Gazette, the UK’s official public record.

The entry, published on Wednesday, read: “The king has been pleased by letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the style, title or attribute of ‘Royal Highness’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince’.”

She has served during an era of seismic change for American society and her own city, from the throes of the AIDS crisis to the legalization of gay marriage, and through the meteoric rise of the tech sector and the nation’s extreme polarization.

Carney’s budget needs 2 votes. Will this funding targeting opposition ridings get him there?

Prime Minister Mark Carney insists the federal budget was crafted to contain a number of measures championed by MPs from other parties, and that those olive branches will become apparent in the coming days.

With one MP already crossing the floor to join the Liberals, Carney now needs only two more votes, or abstentions, to pass his budget.

The unanswered question is whether any of those measures will convince enough opposition MPs that letting the budget pass is in their interests.

Company building Toronto’s new electric ferries faces criminal corruption charges overseas

The shipbuilder awarded $92 million to construct Toronto’s two new electric ferries will soon face trial overseas on corruption charges and sanctions violations, a legal threat experts say could imperil the company.

The Netherlands Public Prosecution Service announced in April that it was prosecuting Damen, a major international shipbuilder headquartered in the Netherlands, for bribery, forgery and money-laundering. The service also said it was investigating the company for violating Russian sanctions.

I bet these will work great mid-winter.

Zohran Mamdani’s victory should terrify the Democrats

There was no defeat to be snatched from the jaws of victory.

The man who shockingly secured the Democratic nomination in June has un-shockingly won the election. Zohran Mamdani, the dimpled, wise-cracking democratic socialist, will become mayor of New York, America’s most populous city.

For those with a taste for 11th-hour upsets in politics, there was little reason to anticipate a surprise. The Mamdani campaign carried the momentum from its primary battle, drawing the highest turnout in a New York mayoral race since the 1960s.

Security Costs Shut Down Germany’s Christmas Markets

Several German towns have canceled their traditional Christmas markets this year, pointing to the mounting costs of new security requirements introduced after a series of terror attacks. Local organizers argue that they are unable to comply with the government’s anti-terror measures, such as installing barriers, setting up surveillance systems, and posting additional guards, all of which have become prerequisites for hosting public events.
