North American free trade is dead. The sooner Canada accepts that, the better

The era of North American free trade is over.

That point was hammered home by the report on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement sent to Congress last week by the U.S. Trade Representative, a prelude to the formal review of the deal set to start in July, but which could get underway earlier.

While it can be read several ways, the report, and USTR Jamieson Greer’s oral comments, reveal that even if the USMCA continues to tick over during the 2026 review, there will be tough demands by the Trump team for concessions from Canada and Mexico, backstopped by the threat of U.S. withdrawal from the agreement on six months notice.

Pope Leo condemns treatment of Gaza in first Christmas message

The Pope condemned conditions for Palestinians in Gaza and urged Russia and Ukraine to “engage in respectful dialogue” in an unusually direct appeal during the first Christmas message of his pontificate.

Delivering his traditional Urbi et Orbi (to the city and the world) message from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica on a damp and overcast morning, the American pope said that the story of Jesus being born in a stable showed that God had “pitched his fragile tent” among the people of the world.

“How, then, can we not think of the tents in Gaza, exposed for weeks to rain, wind and cold?” he said.

Matthew Taub: Two years of inaction have normalized hate crimes in Toronto

This week, mezuzahs were ripped off the doors of multiple units in a Toronto condo tower. The victims included Jewish seniors, among them Holocaust survivors. Police attended, interviews were conducted, and the incidents were correctly treated as hate crimes.

Two weeks earlier, similar acts occurred elsewhere in the city.

Zelensky hails ‘new ideas’ on peace after talks with US envoys

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has given a positive assessment of a conversation he had with US envoys on how to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

Zelensky said Thursday’s call with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, which lasted nearly an hour, had yielded “new ideas in terms of formats, meetings, and… timing on how to bring a real peace closer”. He added later that he would hold another meeting with President Donald Trump “in the near future”.

Earlier this week Zelensky gave details of an updated 20-point peace plan, agreed by US and Ukrainian envoys in Florida.

U.S. alcohol group takes aim at NSLC’s markup on local spirits

The organization that represents some of America’s largest spirits producers is calling for the NSLC to remove a policy that gives preferential markup to Nova Scotian spirit products.

In a recent 77-page report sent to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States outlined trade barriers they face in different countries.

The Canada section covers six pages, where the barriers include the boycott on selling American alcohol in most provinces and preferential markups on local spirits in Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, P.E.I., Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

WORST OF 2025: The Celebrity Freak-Out Award

It was a challenging task, but an esteemed panel of NewsBusters editors, led by MRC President David Bozell and MRC’s Vice President for Research and Publications Brent Baker, boiled down all the biased outbursts from lefty hack hosts, anchors, reporters and pundits in 2025 and on December 17 announced The Media Research Center Award for Worst Quote of the Year.

Of course, every year, there is way too much bias for just one category. So we broke down the Worst of 2025 into five additional categories (The Craziest Analysis Award; The Trashing Trump Award; The Damn Those Conservatives Award; The ICE Breakers Award for Hating Trump’s Deportation Policy; and the Celebrity Freak-Outs Award).

Toronto transit ridership sputters, failing to hit projections or 2024 totals

More than half a decade after the COVID-19 pandemic emptied Toronto’s buses, subways and streetcars, the city’s transit agency is still struggling to recover and hit its ridership targets.

The Toronto Transit Commission has frozen fares for three years, slowly ramped up service and opened a new rapid transit line, but ridership is still lower than in 2019 and falling below expectations.

According to the agency’s 2026 budget document, hopes that more mandatory return-to-work orders would result in more passengers were misguided.

I suggest they have the insane and drug addicted make room for the homeless asylum seekers to boost ridership.

Pentagon report: Chinese military buildup and shift in nuclear force doctrine threatens US homeland

China’s military buildup is making “the U.S. homeland increasingly vulnerable,” according to the Pentagon’s annual China military power report.

This is the result of a combination of their decades-long arms buildup and a shift in nuclear force doctrine. “China maintains a large and growing arsenal of nuclear, maritime, conventional long-range strike, cyber and space capabilities able to directly threaten Americans’ security,” according to the report.

Muslims in Indonesia Show Christians What They Think of Them

Carney loves Muslim values

Indonesia has a reputation for being a “moderate” Muslim nation, but the wind in the Islamic world as a whole is blowing in the opposite direction, as a group of Christians has just discovered.

JAY GOLDBERG: Carney’s ‘failure’ to strike trade deal with Trump was story of the year

U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs might have been named The Canadian Press News Story of the Year, but Prime Minister Mark Carney’s failure to adequately deal with them ought to have been.

When Carney announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Liberal party, after former prime minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation early last year, Carney sold himself to Canadians as the man who could meet the moment and deal with the Trump juggernaut.

The study, conducted by researchers from MIT and other universities in Canada, Poland, and the United States, analyzed how conversations with AI chatbots could persuade people to change their voting intentions more effectively than traditional political advertisements.
