A 15 per cent tariff on Canadian-made cars entering the U.S. would still be a major problem for this country’s automotive sector even if it’s better than what we’ve been threatened with, industry analysts say.
According to reports from several U.S. publications, the U.S. has agreed to cut the tariff on Canadian-made cars from the current 25 per cent to 15, as part of a tentative trade deal this week.
The bigger problem, experts say, is that the tariff would likely apply to all non-U.S. content, including Canadian-made parts.
During a heated interview with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) co-chair Ashik Siddique over the party’s statement honoring Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, CNN’s Boris Sanchez suggested Siddique “have more conversations with folks who have fled that regime and what they think about these statements and the position of the DSA.”
It was an earnest ask, especially considering Sanchez’s own grandfather suffered political persecution under Castro. But it also underscored the one mistaken assumption that so many — on both the left and right — make, that is: if the DSA just knew a little bit more about Castro, or Karl Marx, or Marxism, or Maoism, so on and so forth then they’d become some variation of a capitalist, freedom-loving patriot.
An Ontario judge has discounted the sentence for an Ecuadorian man convicted of violently sexually assaulting a woman because he’s likely going to be deported when he gets out of prison.
Sergio Reyes Loor was convicted of sexual assault causing bodily harm earlier this year in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. A ban has been placed on the publication of information that would identify the victim. The Crown argued that a five-year prison sentence was in order for Reyes Loor, who is a permanent resident of Canada.

Cultural differences do exist and not all of them involve ethnic foods. It’s not just Islamic terrorism that’s at issue. There are fundamental differences in mores and morals of which this horrifying story out of Milwaukee is just one more example.
