At the protests against the Alternativ für Deutschland’s (AfD) party conference in Erfurt last weekend, a reporter for Apollo News was chased through the crowd and kicked in the head. He suffered a bloody wound. The next day, representatives of the anti-AfD alliance ‘Widersetzen’ were asked repeatedly if they condemned the attack. Initially they refused. Eventually, one activist replied: “Fascists with a press pass are still fascists.”
Canada has spent years asking who is interfering inside its borders. Operation Hard Ball raises a harder question: who is using Canada to interfere, intimidate, or operate beyond them?
That is the core of reverse foreign interference. The term is not yet part of Canadian law, but it belongs in Canada’s national-security vocabulary. It describes cases in which transnational criminal, extremist, or digitally enabled networks use Canadian territory, legal protections, diaspora communities, transport routes, immigration systems, or digital space to target people, institutions, or foreign jurisdictions from Canadian soil.

Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine was never about protecting Russians or strengthening Russia’s place in the world. It was always a war of neo-imperialist vanity, consolidation of power, organized theft and cultural annihilation.

Is crime falling? Some conservatives, notably Steve Bannon, argue that Americans should ignore the FBI’s crime statistics showing record drops in violent crime. The murder rate last year fell to the lowest rate ever recorded, and the violent crime rate is clearly at the lowest in many decades. But Bannon recently declared that “nobody believes” FBI crime data or its director, Kash Patel, adding: “I don’t want to hear any more statistics about how crime’s coming down.”
That skepticism overlooks an important distinction.
