Lametti Says Ottawa Open to Outlawing Residential School Denialism

Federal Justice Minister David Lametti says he is open to the recommendations in a new report that proposes civil and criminal sanctions against Canadians who engage in residential-school denialism.

Lametti was responding to an interim report by his appointee, Kimberly Murray, a member of the Kahnesatake Mohawk Nation in Quebec, who was tasked in June 2022 to identify measures including legal ones to address what the government said were unmarked graves and burial sites of children at former Indian residential schools.

Family Groups and LGBT Activist Uniting Against Bill That Could Make Pedophiles a Protected Class

In an unlikely alliance, Christian family values groups and an LGBT activist have signed a petition against a proposed Connecticut bill they say could make pedophiles a protected sexual minority.

The bill, HB 6638, would revise the language of the state’s anti-discrimination statutes.

The current definition of “sexual orientation” in Connecticut law excludes protections for “any behavior that is a sex offense crime.” An update to the law would remove that wording.

Irish people could be jailed for ‘hate speech’, critics of proposed law warn

Irish citizens who campaign against transgender women being able to use female changing rooms or crisis centres risk jail under an “Orwellian” hate-speech law, critics have claimed.

The Irish senate last week debated the controversial Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offences) Bill 2022.

The bill seeks to expand the range of people protected from hate speech to include those with “gender identities”, including transgender or “gender other than those of male or female”.

Manitoba RCMP say semi-truck had right of way at time of deadly Trans-Canada Highway crash

Manitoba RCMP say they have obtained video footage of the deadly crash between a semi-truck and bus on the Trans-Canada Highway on Thursday that killed 15 people and sent 10 people to hospital, saying the semi-truck had the right of way at the time of the crash.

Superintendent Rob Lasson with the RCMP’s Major Crimes section provided an update to the investigation on Friday, saying they obtained video footage from the semi-truck trailer of the crash, which occurred shortly around noon at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 5.

Canada needs legal tools to fight residential school denialism, report says

OTTAWA – Canada should give “urgent consideration” to legal mechanisms as a way to combat residential school denialism, says a new report from the independent special interlocutor on unmarked graves.

Justice Minister David Lametti said he is open to such a solution.

Kimberly Murray made the call in an interim report released Friday, just over a year after she was appointed to an advisory role focused on how Ottawa can help Indigenous communities search for children who died and disappeared from residential schools.
