A student is raising questions about the Waterloo Region District School Board’s decision to spend $175,000 to rename a high school in Waterloo, Ont.
Grade 10 student Ishan Acharya’s inquiry stems from a vote by the board trustees in 2021 to rename Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School. The reason cited for the decision was that Canada’s first prime minister had a founding role in the residential school system.
The military reprimanded soldiers after they raised concerns about an order to monitor Canadians’ online activity during the COVID-19 pandemic, CBC News has learned.
But the military’s top lawyer later warned of risks associated with this kind of monitoring, and a review found it violated the rules, according to internal documents viewed by CBC News.
In March 2020, the Canadian Armed Forces tasked a team with creating anonymous social media accounts to comb the internet and produce daily reports for military leaders that included the status of COVID-19 in Canada, as well as the political discourse and any misinformation surrounding the pandemic.

Investigators in the Maldives are trying to work out how five experienced divers died in the same spot at the same time.
The five Italian divers became trapped in a sea cave at a depth of about 50-60m off the island of Alimathaa in an atoll called Vaavu.
They had arrived at the dive site on board a boat called the Duke of York, which runs dive trips in the Maldives.

A Canadian doctor has suggested that babies with severe deformities could be euthanized under the country’s controversial assisted suicide laws.
Quebec College of Physicians member Louis Roy has been condemned by a lobbying group after a comment he made during a 2022 parliamentary committee resurfaced.
Roy previously said that under current Canadian law, assisted suicide could be considered for infants up to one year old with severe ailments.

Frankenstein is transphobic because it is about “a constructed body”, a non-binary filmmaker has claimed.
Jane Schoenbrun, an American director who describes herself as trans and queer, said the Frankenstein adaptations, based on Mary Shelley’s 1818 gothic novel, are an example of older horror films featuring a “trans monster”.
“This image of the trans monster kept coming up, whether that be Norman Bates or Buffalo Bill or Frankenstein as a constructed body, and there was this lineage of trans people having really complicated feelings about those movies,” Schoenbrun told The Hollywood Reporter.
