Is Perrier as pure as it claims? The bottled water scandal gripping France

France’s multi-billion euro mineral water companies are under the spotlight because of climate change and growing concerns about the industry’s environmental impact.

At issue is whether some world-famous brands, notably the iconic Perrier label, can even continue calling themselves “natural mineral water”.

A decision in the Perrier case is due in the coming months. It follows revelations in the French media about illicit filtration systems that have been widely used in the industry, apparently because of worries about water contamination, after years of drought linked to climate change.

I will always be too lower class for Perrier.

Girl Guides of Canada says it is pausing all trips to the U.S. starting next month over concerns some members could be impacted by border changes put in place by the Trump administration.

In an email to Global News, the organization said it had made the decision to pause U.S.-bound trips as of Sept. 1 “after careful consideration.”

A white supremacist group is growing its ranks in the London and St. Thomas areas of southwestern Ontario with the location of several meeting places now identified by CBC News.

Nationalist-13 has held several meetings and anti-immigration protests recently. It’s based in Hamilton, and is what’s known as an “active club.” Active clubs are part of a neo-Nazi network that has grown globally, moving from online forums into real-world communities, including some in southwestern Ontario.

Isabella Cêpa, a social media commentator and feminist known for her advocacy against domestic violence, was facing up to 25 years in prison under Brazil’s “social racism” law, a legal provision that treats alleged transphobic speech as a form of racial discrimination.

Criminals who cross-dress can now avoid deportation

Another week, another mad story from the immigration courts. According to the Telegraph, a 27-year-old Algerian criminal has been permitted to stay in Britain as a refugee because he describes himself as transgender.

The man entered the UK in 2013, illegally. Citing the ‘situation’ in Algeria, he was given limited leave to remain as a refugee by UK authorities. Following a string of offences – including burglary, theft and battery – that landed him in jail, the Home Office issued a deportation order in 2022. He appealed, arguing that the fact he ‘was and is a transvestite and / or transgender’ made it too dangerous for him to return to Algeria. He also said that his father ‘threatened to kill him’.

Michael Higgins: The United Church’s abhorrent excuses for October 7

It is loathsome when anyone describes the butchery that happened in Israel on October 7 as an act of “resistance,” but it is particularly troubling when it comes from people within the United Church of Canada.

Such hateful rhetoric can be found in a proposal that will be considered by the church’s general council meeting, which starts Thursday. It begins by stating that “the Gaza genocide is the most recent and most severe expression of the colonialist oppression of the state of Israel upon the Palestinian people.”

That is one sick church.

A black accounts worker sued for race discrimination after colleagues didn’t give her a card on her birthday.

Benabel Marston told an employment tribunal that ‘everyone else got a card and snacks’ on their anniversary, but she got ‘nothing’.

Ms Marston, who identifies as black African and worked in the finance department at the Hilton at Gatwick airport, sued her employer after being sacked a few months later.
