WASHINGTON — United States president-elect Donald Trump may declare a national emergency in order to turn his threat to slap Canada with 25 per cent across-the-board tariffs into a reality.

With less than two weeks to go until Trump returns to the White House, it’s still not clear how the Republican leader will enact his tariff agenda. Greta Peisch, the former general counsel for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, said the incoming president could use the International Economic Emergency Powers Act (IEEPA).

I really don’t care that the Corporate Welfare Class gets hurt they deserve it but Canadian workers will also suffer.

“It is her own soul that Canada risks today.” Rudyard Kipling’s cable to a Montreal newspaper was an explosive intervention in the country’s 1911 election, which turned on a familiar question: should Canadians submit to the “economic force” of the United States? The Liberal Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier had gambled that Canadians would welcome an expansive free trade agreement but Kipling urged this young nation not to yoke itself to a reckless people who “have so decimated their resources” that they needed “virgin fields” elsewhere. His words decisively reinforced Laurier’s Conservative opponents, who alleged he was colluding with Americans to annex Canada. Laurier soon went down to a crushing defeat.

One of the unexpected observations about those charlatans who have visited woke nonsense and leftist economic carnage upon us, is that these folks have no sense of humour.

This truism has recently manifested from a playful jab by the incoming president of the United States.

Among the most senior officials in Ottawa, there is a document circulating that outlines specific details about how Canada could retaliate against Donald Trump’s tariff threat.

The list includes hundreds of American-made goods that Canada is considering hitting with retaliatory tariffs, according to a senior Canadian government source.

American steel products, ceramics including toilets and sinks, glassware, flowers and different types of plastics are all included as possible targets for retaliatory tariffs.

Let’s call it the Crowder Amendment.

Steven Crowder, the conservative talk show host, is the son of an American father and a French-Canadian mother, from Quebec. Born in the U.S., Crowder’s mother returned to the Montreal area with Steve and attempted to enroll him in an English language publicly funded school.  He was rejected because, you see, Steve does not have the right blood lines. Neither his father nor his mother attended an English language school in Canada and he was therefore denied an eligibility certificate. You can read more about what Crowder went through here.

So it turns out Donald Trump doesn’t really want to annex Canada. Seriously. Anyone who watched his news conference Tuesday, and not just the short clip shared on social media, should come away assured, as much as one can be with Trump anyway, that his comments about this country becoming the 51st state really are little more than trolling. Certainly, the U.S. president-elect repeatedly musing about absorbing Canada has never been funny, and the words themselves undermine Canadian sovereignty, but nothing Trump said Tuesday was much different than what he’s been saying for weeks.

I would consider a merger with the USA.
