Ottawa designates cartels and street gangs as terrorist groups, fulfilling promise to Trump
The federal government designated seven criminal organizations — including cartels and street gangs involved in trafficking fentanyl — as terrorists on Thursday, delivering on a promise made to U.S. President Donald Trump in hopes of staving off economically devastating tariffs.
Included on the list are the Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) and Sinaloa cartels, considered two of Mexico’s largest and most powerful organized crime groups.
“These are ruthless, transnational criminal organizations,” said Public Safety Minister David McGuinty during a news conference on Parliament Hill.

After Trump raised the idea at a dinner in Mar-A-Lago attended by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Nov. 29, Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic Leblanc said the “joke” was actually a positive.
“The president was teasing us. It was, of course, in no way a serious comment,” LeBlanc said.

OTTAWA — A new poll suggests that more than a quarter of Canadians — 27 per cent — now see the United States as an “enemy” country, while another 30 per cent still say they consider the U.S. an ally.
Another 27 per cent of respondents to the Leger survey said they consider the United States to be a “neutral” country.
The poll comes as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens to impose economically devastating tariffs on Canada and has repeatedly pushed the idea that Canada should become a U.S. state.
