Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he will scrap the carbon levy on industrial emitters as well as the consumer carbon levy.
In video statement released Monday, Mr. Poilievre says if elected to govern in the upcoming election, his government would repeal the entire carbon price law, including the tax on Canadian businesses and industries.
This means there would not be a levy on Canadian steel, aluminum, food production, concrete and other industries, he said.
On Monday at an energy conference in Houston, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the Trump administration will end the Biden administration’s “irrational, quasi-religious policies on climate change that imposed endless sacrifices on our citizens.”
He added that, “Natural gas is responsible for 43 per cent of U.S. electricity production,” and beyond the obvious scale and cost problems, there’s “simply no physical way that wind, solar and batteries could replace the myriad uses of natural gas.”
In other words, as a federal election looms, once again the United States is diverging from Canada when it comes to energy policy.
News this week emerged about the collapse of Swedish battery startup Northvolt. “Like many companies in the battery sector,” the failed company’s website explained, “Northvolt has experienced a series of compounding challenges in recent months that eroded its financial position.” European Governments, including those of Britain and the EU, have long claimed that as pioneers of green policy and the ‘transition to a low carbon economy’, their policies will cause domestic industries and the green economy to boom. But instead of the green dream turning into reality, across the continent there is only a bleak economic outlook and deindustrialisation. Given that so much of this was predicted, yet those predictions met with policymakers’ intransigence, isn’t it time to ask if this nightmare is a feature of green policy, not merely a bug?
Setting ourselves stringent net zero targets will help us get ahead of other countries in the race to develop green technologies of the future. We know this must be true because Ed Miliband, and many others, keep telling us so. It is just that things don’t seem to be working out quite this way in the real world.

President Donald Trump vowed to release the nation’s energy sector from the tight grip of regulations, and on Wednesday details of that plan were announced by new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin, who called it the most consequential day of deregulation in U.S. history.
“Today, the green new scam ends as the EPA does its part to usher in the golden age of American success,” Zeldin said. “Our actions will lower the cost of living by making it more affordable to purchase a car, heat your home and operate a business. Jobs will be created, especially in the US auto industry, and our nation will become stronger for it.”

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is very concerned about financial conflicts of interest that new Liberal leader (and our next prime minister) Mark Carney may be hiding. But I’m far more concerned about the one out in the open: Carney is now supposed to act for the good of the country after lobbying to defund and drive out of existence Canada’s oil and gas companies, steel companies, car companies and any other sector dependent on fossil fuels. He’s done this through the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), which he founded in 2021.
There is no humanity in his carcass.
Mark Carney, our next prime minister, has floated a climate policy plan that he says will be better for Canadians than the “divisive (read: widely hated) consumer carbon tax.”
But in reality, Carney’s plan is an exercise in misdirection. Instead of paying the “consumer carbon tax” directly and receiving carbon rebates, Canadians will pay more via higher prices for products that flow from Canada’s “large industrial emitters,” who Carney plans to saddle with higher carbon taxes, indirectly imposing the consumer carbon tax by passing those costs onto Canadians.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s 10 per cent tariff on Canadian energy should be a cause for celebration in Ottawa. After all, Trump is only finishing the job the Trudeau government started: systematically crippling the energy sector in pursuit of their net-zero dream.
It’s hard to imagine Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault or his Liberal predecessors, Catherine McKenna and Jonathan Wilkinson, shedding a tear over this development. These are the same people who have spent years declaring oil and gas the great evil of our time. Now, the tariffs are here to speed up the decline of an industry they have worked tirelessly to strangle with regulations.
European countries have led the drive to adopt green energy policies. Their collective experiences provide a sobering message for the rest of the world on the costs and ineffectiveness of green energy policies.
When energy costs rise, it affects almost all other costs in a society. It leads to more regulation, rising costs, rising taxes, rising subsidies, rising indebtedness and rising inflation. It is also leading to deindustrialization as European manufactured goods become increasingly uncompetitive.
