The foolish immigration policies of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals and their NDP backers have burdened Canada’s health-care system, inflated housing costs and are now starting to annoy Washington.
America’s immigration problems at its southern border are nightmarish by comparison, but some members of Congress have also voiced concerns that their northern border with Canada has become a backdoor entry into the United States for increasing numbers of illegal migrants and drugs.

British streets have been the stage for the latest war in the Middle East between Israel and those who yearn for its destruction. The day after the Hamas pogrom saw a large demonstration outside the Israeli embassy, before any retaliation by Israel for the slaughter of 1,400 of its citizens. This was not protest, but a celebration of the atrocity. Then, for five Saturdays in a row, we have seen increasingly large marches through the centre of London, numbering 100,000 or more each time. These were supposedly pro-Palestine, but in reality, they were anti-Israel. Each march has seen widespread antisemitism, terror sympathising, and increasingly violent behaviour. The march to Trafalgar Square on 4 November ended in violence against the police.
With poll after poll suggesting the Liberals are trailing the Conservatives by double-digit margins, pressure is ratcheting up on Justin Trudeau to reconsider his plans to lead the party in the next election, say some former senior Liberals, but others say time is on Trudeau’s side and there’s a pathway for the prime minister to get out of this slump in the coming months.
I don’t see how anyone can believe the economy will be back on track when Trudeau’s immigration plan will exasperate the affordability issue and further the decline in Canada’s standard of living. Not to mention his Net Zero madness.

Since August last year, 20,700 migrants have arrived in Chicago from Texas. The Lone Star State’s Governor Greg Abbott sent migrants to Chicago and other Democrat-run cities because of their proud status as ‘sanctuary cities.’ They offer enhanced protection against detention or deportation for undocumented migrants.
Now, Illinois’ harsh winters, lack of migrant infrastructure, and ambivalent support from locals has made many people, who undertook the harsh US-Mexico border journey, actually turn around and go back home.

A thoughtful approach to immigration has been a historical strength of Canadian economic policy. The recent post-COVID-19 immigration surge has created a number of well-known challenges, however, as slow-moving housing markets and social services systems adjust to the sudden rise in the country’s population.
But another, seemingly more basic, problem has arisen for policymakers and analysts alike: Canada’s population has become increasingly difficult to count, and the balance of evidence points toward an undercount of one million temporary residents in the country’s main employment survey. This has eroded the reliability of a host of market-relevant variables involving population counts, from employment figures to housing construction to productivity.
It is becoming clear to an increasing number of Canadians that the rapid influx of new immigrants brought in by the federal Liberals is exposing cracks in a country with an overburdened health system, a massive social safety net and a bureaucracy that stifles the economy and prevents housing and infrastructure from keeping up with population growth.
A series of recent polls found that 44 per cent of the country thinks immigration levels are too high, with even higher levels of dissatisfaction in Liberal strongholds such as Vancouver (49 per cent) and the Greater Toronto Area (57 per cent).

Immigrants to Canada are increasingly leaving this country for opportunities elsewhere, according to a study(opens in a new tab) conducted by the Institute for Canadian Citizenship and the Conference Board of Canada.
In fact, the number of immigrants who left Canada rose by 31 per cent above the national average(opens in a new tab) in 2017 and 2019.
According to the study, factors that influence onward migration include economic integration, a sense of belonging, racism, homeownership, or a lack thereof, and economic opportunities in other countries, the report revealed.

Swanton Sector Border Patrol agents arrested a Colombian migrant in Vermont for allegedly smuggling a group of Mexican migrants across the Canadian border. Not all foreign fugitives are able to be tracked, caught, and deported, according to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

After steadily increasing the number of newcomers over the years, Ottawa has announced it will cap the number of permanent residents it accepts at 500,000 in both 2025 and 2026. It’s finally dawned on the Trudeau Liberals that there needs to be an economic reset. Canada’s housing market is too expensive and our health care system is overloaded — and the impact of costly temporary resident programs is too often overlooked .
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government this week took a baby step toward recognizing its immigration policy needs some fixing by halting future increases in the number of permanent newcomers the country intends to accept.
Still, Immigration Minister Marc Miller seemed to suggest that ”stabilizing” the number of new permanent residents at 500,000 constitutes a concession on his government’s part. Yet, under Mr. Miller’s plan, Canada is still on track to accept more new permanent residents next year (485,000) than it will absorb this year (465,000), or than it did last year (more than 437,000) before the number tops out at 500,000 in both 2025 and 2026.
Time to address the immigration number that matters now
Don’t look too closely at the immigration targets the federal government set Wednesday. They’re not the numbers that matter right now.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller kept the already-planned target of 500,000 in 2025, but said there’d be no increase in 2026. But that isn’t Canada’s immigration number.
The figure that matters more is the 2.2 million in temporary residents who are in Canada. That number has surged for reasons that have nothing to do with immigration planning. And the Liberal government should be screwing up their courage to do something about that, right away.
