UN peacekeepers are due to finish their withdrawal from Mali on Sunday, after a long-running mission lasting a decade.
Minusma – the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission – began in 2013 after an armed rebellion, but has been asked to leave by the country’s ruling military government.
The UN mission’s head said it did a lot but fell below expectations.
With some 310 peacekeepers killed, Minusma was the UN’s second deadliest mission worldwide, after Lebanon.
An attack on Christians in Nigeria over Christmas has left nearly 200 people dead. While Muslim herders are thought to be behind the violence, some major media outlets have blamed climate change for the killings, appearing to downplay existing religious conflicts.
The massacre took place on Christmas Eve in 26 different villages across the central Plateau state in the country’s interior. Locals said that bands of men armed with guns and machetes attacked villagers, killing 198 and wounding a further 300 in some of the worst anti-Christian violence seen in Nigeria in years, according to the Catholic News Agency.

A total of 90,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed throughout the country this weekend
French authorities warned of a “very high” terror threat on New Year’s Eve due to the war in Gaza as Germany also braced itself for violence.
Gérard Darmanin, the French interior minister, said on Friday that 90,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed throughout the country during the upcoming festivities.
“I’ve requested a very strong mobilisation of police forces and the gendarmerie under the context of a very high terrorist threat, of course due to what’s happening in Israel and Palestine,” Mr Darmanin said.
Pakistan has started the mass deportation of “unregistered” Afghans in the country. The move sends back hundreds of thousands of people who fled the Taliban when they took over in 2021 after American troops withdrew, and violates principles of refugee non-refoulement. If forcibly returned, these refugees are at risk of persecution.
Pakistan claims its mass deportations of these Afghans is due to “increased terrorism” in the country — but it was the government of Pakistan that for decades supported the Taliban in Afghanistan. Ever since they took over the country in 2021, Afghanistan has just become a safe haven for terrorist groups.

A Jewish New Yorker who survived Hamas’ attack on the Nova Music Festival reunited with the man who saved her life — but admits she’s still nervous in the US.

Provincial police have charged a Moroccan man after a series of bomb threats were made across the province and linked to similar incidents in Europe.
