he relentless growth of multiculturalism across twenty-first-century Europe has had many unexpected consequences—one of the most unexpected being the sudden explosion in belief in genies.

Known in Arabic as ‘djinn’ (singular = djinni), genies are repeatedly mentioned in the Quran and are a required element of belief for all good Muslims. This explains how, last month, a case was able to come before a British court in which a London imam was convicted for the crime, hitherto wholly alien to UK shores, of pretending to be a genie, thereby tricking a series of underage girls into having illegal sex with him in the back of his car.

How would you describe a culture where women are flogged in public for ‘inappropriate dress’? A culture where one woman suffered 40 lashes from a leather whip for the crime of wearing trousers and a T-shirt? A culture where a man who lies with a man risks being whipped a hundred times before being put in a dank cell for five years? A culture where apostasy is considered such an abominable sin that even a heavily pregnant woman could be sentenced to death for supposedly committing it?

Personally, I would call such a culture ‘alien’. In fact, I would call it backward, regressive, inhuman and morally inferior to the freer, more forgiving culture we Brits are lucky to live in. Why, then, was the unionist MP Jim Allister rebuked in the Commons yesterday for suggesting that the bloodletting maniac in Belfast heralded from an ‘alien culture’? For all of the primitive punishments listed above, all that state barbarism, took place in the nation where he was reportedly born: Sudan.

Henry Nowak’s inhumane treatment at the hands of police in his dying moments has reignited the debate over two-tier policing in Britain. The political establishment – led by UK prime minister Keir Starmer – has been quick to pour water on this suggestion. But the evidence that some cultures are treated more equally than others by the authorities continues to mount.

I don’t know what’s worse, junk science or junk history. There is unending propaganda about an Islamic Golden Age of the past that today’s Islamists want to recreate. Much the same as a century ago, fables about an “Aryan super-race” long before Western Christianity motivated a lethal totalitarianism. Neither is true, of course, and obscures the amazing story of how Western Civilization got us to where we are.

Signs on each of the doors, as well as one near the entrance to the cordoned-off area, read: “Ramadan Mubarak,” an Arabic greeting used during the Muslim holy month that translates to “Happy Ramadan” or “Blessed Ramadan.”
