We must be careful not to succumb to magical thinking.

The spectacular destruction of Iran’s nuclear weapons infrastructure by Israel and the U.S. is a long-neglected restoration of America’s deterrent power. Yet the subsequent cease-fire President Trump imposed on Israel bespeaks again the West’s long failure to understand the nature of traditional orthodox Islam–– particularly its sanctified violence in fulfillment of Allah’s command to wage religious war “Until,” as the Islamic Republic’s godfather, the Ayatollah Khomeini, announced, “the cry ‘There is no god but Allah’ resounds over the whole world.”

Virtually all Canadian politicians have succumbed to magical thinking regarding Islam.

A prominent Berlin university hospital is under fire after a Muslim student group hosted gender-segregated events on its campus, raising fresh concerns over growing tolerance for illiberal practices at German universities. The events, which took place at the prestigious university hospital Charité, involved a Muslim student group called Medislam Collective. Men were seated on one side of the room, and women on the other—without exceptions. Meanwhile, the university has remained silent.

Neither the Islamic group nor the administration of Charité has been willing to clarify whether the segregation is a matter of free choice or an imposed rule. While similar practices at other German universities have at times been described by organisers as “spontaneous” or “voluntary,” the silence of Charité could be interpreted as a tacit form of approval.

Never mind that in my view, it is stifling in summer and slushy in winter, a concrete jungle from which it often feels there is no escape thanks to a terrifying, erratic subway, an incomprehensible bus system, and all of it laid out on an alienating grid system suited to human compasses, not people.

Then there are the rodents and the cockroaches, the poorly-made housing, and the sky-high prices.

The Times reported this week that thousands of social media accounts connected to terror groups, including Iran-backed Hezbollah and the Houthis in Yemen, have been allowed to operate freely on mainstream platforms. While everyone can see what is posted on Instagram and X, it’s much harder to tell the extent of the problem on encrypted services such as Telegram and WhatsApp.
