As we already reported, Jette Nietzard, national spokesperson of the Green Youth Party, has hinted at the possibility of armed resistance if Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) manages to enter government after the 2029 federal elections. Her statements, made in a podcast by the public broadcaster RBB and repeated in an interview with the weekly Freitag, have sparked outrage due to their political and social implications.
Germany’s main ruling party, the Christian Democratic CDU, has been dropping in the polls for the fourth consecutive week while the right-wing opposition AfD keeps rising, as the latest polling data shows them being neck and neck for the second time since the February election.
Germans reject a ban on the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) by a majority of 52% to 27% in favour, according to a new representative survey published by the Allensbach Institute polling organization on Saturday.
The proportion opposed to a ban rises to 65% in the east of the country, according to the poll published by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung daily newspaper, while it falls to 49% in the western states. The AfD enjoys widespread support in the formerly communist eastern states.
The pollsters found a range of reasons for rejecting a ban on the party, which is monitored as a far-right extremist organization by the domestic intelligence agencies.
The main reason was that respondents were familiar with AfD supporters, with 67% of west Germans and 88% of east Germans having AfD supporters in their circle of acquaintances. These acquaintances were seen in a much more sympathetic light than the party itself.

Some of the Afghan nationals deported from Germany to Kabul on Friday have already said they plan to return, according to media reports. The flight, from the city of Leipzig, carried 81 Afghan men, all either convicted criminals or considered security threats.
Upon arrival in Kabul, several deportees told Afghan journalists they would soon try to return to Germany, underscoring the difficulty Berlin faces in enforcing long-term expulsions.
Germany’s highest administrative court has dealt a major blow to the government’s migration policies, ruling that Berlin must grant entry visas to thousands of Afghan migrants.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul confirmed that the ruling is “legally binding,” therefore Germany has to “honour its promises.”
The decision follows a landmark case brought by an Afghan woman and her family, who were guaranteed relocation to Germany under the federal resettlement programme in October 2023 but have since been stranded in Pakistan.
Foreigners may only account for 15 per cent of people living in Germany, but data gained by the right-wing Alternative for Germany party shows many names that might be associated with migrant-heritage communities feature disproportionately in unemployment welfare recipients.
