The trickle of information on Chinese Communist Party (CCP) interference in Canadian affairs has turned into a torrent. Current and former intelligence officials are coming out and reporting a pattern of government indifference to CCP interference in domestic affairs that spans back decades. Governments and political leaders have managed to ignore the problem with impunity so far.
Will that finally change with the latest revelations?
OTTAWA — All eyes will be on New Democrats on Tuesday as they decide whether they will support the Conservatives’ motion to compel the prime minister’s chief of staff to testify on alleged Chinese interference in past elections.
The strong opposition to David Johnston’s appointment as special rapporteur investigating Chinese interference in elections reveals how our times, and our politics, have changed.
In a previous column, I suggested that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre should accept Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s choice of Mr. Johnston on the grounds that the former governor-general was appointed to that post by then-Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper, and that he is one of this country’s most trusted, and trustworthy, figures.
Johnston is a suspect “choice” given his own ChiCom links alone.
The United States ran a secret probe into national-security threats posed by Chinese overseas operations that drew alarming conclusions about Canada, alleges a new book co-authored by a former RCMP officer.
The book says the project, code-named Operation Dragon Lord, led to an unnerving takeaway: that Beijing’s activities in Canada represented a security threat to the United States.
This investigation wasn’t triggered by recent headlines. It happened in the 1990s. Yet it provides a window into current controversies, argues the soon-to-be-released book The Mosaic Effect: How the Chinese Communist Party Started a Hybrid War in America’s Backyard.
The timeliness of that old episode will be underscored Monday when one of the key intelligence figures of the era testifies before a Canadian parliamentary committee.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau refused to say Friday if he would make an attempt by Pierre Poilievre‘s Conservatives to force his chief of staff to testify on foreign election interference a matter of confidence.
MP are expected to vote as early as Tuesday on a Conservative-sponsored motion calling on Trudeau’s chief of staff Katie Telford to testify at one or the other of two House of Commons committees investigating allegations of election interference. That vote could test the strength of the deal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made last year with Trudeau to support the Liberal minority government on matters of confidence.

… Mr. Johnston cannot seriously consider his task to be making a recommendation on whether there should or should not be a full inquiry. That has to be a given now. He can only be making recommendations on how broad that inquiry should be – and it has to be broad – or how to fit the requirement of protecting the secrecy of intelligence gathering with the necessity of telling the public what the heck is going on.
And at this point, the inquiry must deal with two sets of issues on two tracks. One is the narrow question of whether Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ignored credible warnings about Beijing’s meddling. The other is the broader issue of foreign interference throughout Canada’s politics.

… Johnston’s job is to run interference for Justin Trudeau in this scandal. That’s all there is to it. Johnston is beholden to Trudeau, Trudeau is beholden to Johnston, and they are both deeply compromised by their relationships with Beijing’s emissaries and bagmen in Canada, and by their associations with the Montreal-centred corporate China lobby. And putting on the mask of an “independent” interlocutor is not the first time Johnston has scratched Justin Trudeau’s back, and not the first time Johnston has carried Xi Jinping’s water in Canada.

With all their filibustering and obstructionist “rapporteur” manoeuvres to draw attention away from the interference operations Beijing ran on their behalf during the 2019 and 2021 elections, the Trudeau Liberals might think they’re being clever. But they’re being too clever by half.
The longer this drags out, the more light gets shed on the squalid and intimate relationship between the Liberals’ political base in this country’s wealthy and well-connected Mandarin-bloc hierarchy and the Ferrari-driving consiglieri of Beijing’s strong-arming and influence-peddling network in Canada. OTTAWA – Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin, a senior military officer who was acquitted of a sexual assault charge late last year, has filed a $6 million lawsuit against the Canadian government.
Fortin is also suing 16 high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and chief of the defence staff Gen. Wayne Eyre, alleging defamation, misfeasance in public office, negligent investigation, public disclosure of private facts, breach of confidence and conspiracy to cause damages.
… The root of the problem is that Canadian political parties have a rather loose definition of what constitutes a party member. Most parties allow people as young as 14 to vote in nomination and leadership contests. Neither do you need to be a full-fledged citizen — permanent residency will suffice. Candidates can go to immigrant communities to recruit new members who may not speak English or understand party policies or even agree with the party’s positions on issues. The candidates can then have donors pay for these memberships in cash.
Why should a Chinese international student who is under 18 or a non-citizen permanent resident get to help decide who will represent a Canadian political party in that riding? Raising party voting ages to at least 18 might help, as would new rules lengthening the amount of time someone must be a paid-up party member in order to cast a vote in a leadership or nomination race.
Who thought this set up was a good idea? Oh yea it was the the same evil bastards that brought us “diversity and multiculturalism.”
A prominent Ontario politician with a history of echoing Beijing’s talking points on controversial issues is urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to call an inquiry into Canada’s spy agency, accusing it of a litany of wrongdoing from racial profiling to spreading false allegations.

The Chinese regime’s interference in Canadian elections revealed in recent media leaks is only the “tip of the iceberg,” and anti-Beijing activists say they have a good idea who its favoured candidates are, a Commons committee heard on March 10.
“If we want to say who are the 11 potential nominees that CSIS had kind of mentioned, I can pretty much guess who they are,” said Cheuk Kwan, co-chair of the Toronto Association for Democracy in China.
Kwan was referring to media reporting that the Chinese regime had funded at least 11 candidates in the 2019 election.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has removed Progressive Conservative MPP Vincent Ke from his position as parliamentary assistant, following a Global News report of allegations by intelligence sources that Ke was involved in an election interference network directed by China’s consulate in Toronto.
