OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation released its annual New Year’s Tax Changes report today to highlight major tax changes in 2024.
“Tax hikes will give Canadians a hangover in the new year,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF. “Canadians need help with the rising cost of living, but the feds will be reaching deeper into our pockets with major tax hikes in 2024.”
Canada’s justice minister said he hopes to avoid accusations that the Liberal government is trying to regulate or curb speech with its planed bill to protect people from online harms.
“Where I don’t want this bill to go is down some sort of path where it looks like people are trying to tell you what to think, or how to criticize people,” federal Justice Minister Arif Virani told The Canadian Press in a wide-ranging interview last week.
“That’s absolutely not what we’re talking about.”

A new survey suggests one in four Canadians are extremely concerned about having enough income to cover their basic needs, with the highest degree of hardship being felt by single parents.

A Conservative MP is accusing the federal government of failing to include job guarantees for Canadians in its subsidy contracts with foreign electric vehicle battery manufacturers.
Tory MP Rick Perkins told the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates (OGGO) on Dec. 14 that he has read a confidential Volkswagen contract and “what’s not in it is a clause that protects Canadian jobs.”

OTTAWA – The Palestinian ambassador in Ottawa is praising Canada’s vote at the United Nations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, while urging the Canadian government to do more to stop Israel’s military campaign.
Mona Abuamara, the chief representative of the Palestinian General Delegation to Canada, says Ottawa could act as a catalyst and inspire other countries to push for a peaceful two-state solution that would include a Palestinian country.
