At a high-profile event for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sept. 22, Canadian lawmakers gave 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka, a Canadian immigrant who ostensibly fought for the First Ukrainian Division against the Russians in World War II, a standing ovation for his service in the cause of freedom. Speaker of the House Anthony Rota introduced Hunka as a “war veteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians.”
Neo-Nazis and white nationalists have gone on a pilgrimage to an Ontario memorial to the Waffen SS Galicia division, the Ukrainian Nazi-led unit, after one of its veterans received a standing ovation in Parliament last month, prompting renewed calls for the monument to be torn down.
White nationalists have posted photographs of themselves on social media at the memorial, alongside tributes to Yaroslav Hunka, whom they call “a hero.” One man, whose face is obscured, is wearing a T-shirt featuring the black sun – a neo-Nazi symbol based on a mosaic at the German castle used by Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS.

Both Liberals and Conservatives tell the Star they are starting to see a shift in online discourse in Canada about the war. Some report a rising number of emails coming into their offices that question the $9 billion in spending Canada has pledged since 2022 to help Ukraine fight Russia’s invasion.
At one point Freeland attempted to link support for the near universally hated carbon tax with support for Ukraine. Stupid move.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday senior bureaucrats are reviewing the Deschenes Commission report — a 1980s-era independent inquiry that looked at alleged Nazi war criminals in Canada — with an eye to making more of it public.
Struck by former prime minister Brian Mulroney, the Deschenes Commission’s final report was released in 1986 and is composed of two parts.
The first, which included recommendations to make it easier to extradite war criminals, was released publicly. The second was marked secret and the names of alleged Nazis in Canada were never released.
In last year’s budget, the federal Liberals promised to “carry out a swift defence policy review to equip Canada for a world that has become more dangerous.”
Apparently, in its “swift” review, the Trudeau government discovered the world was less dangerous, not more. How else to explain this week’s news the Liberals have ordered our armed forces to cut nearly $1 billion from its overall budget?
The United States government cannot be sued in Canada for its alleged role in infamous brainwashing experiments at a Montreal psychiatric hospital, Quebec’s Court of Appeal ruled this week.

OTTAWA – Former RCMP intelligence director Cameron Ortis allegedly sent an email demanding $20,000 to a B.C man under international criminal investigation in exchange for secret police information that contained the name of at least one undercover agent.
That’s just one of the shocking allegations revealed by Crown prosecutor Judy Kliewer during her opening statement of Ortis’ trial Tuesday.
But his lawyer says he had permission to do that sort of thing and given the Trudeau government I bet that’s true.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is defending the caption on photos he posted to social media on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation after Liberal cabinet minister Marc Miller accused him of misidentifying Inuit people as Algonquin.
On Saturday, Poilievre posted two photos to X, formerly Twitter, of himself meeting with three Inuit people wearing traditional clothing, with the caption that he was “honoured to join the Algonquin Elders and leaders at the eternal flame to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.”

OTTAWA – Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly says Canada is determining how it can best help with an international military intervention in Haiti, but a fellow Liberal MP says it’s unlikely that will involve any military role for Canada.
“Canada has always been involved in issues related to Haiti. We will continue to be,” Joly told reporters Tuesday morning on Parliament Hill, in French.
Haiti is irredeemably awful. Must be a lot of easy money to be had playing white savior.
Bank of Canada deputy governor Nicolas Vincent says businesses are still raising their prices more frequently and by larger amounts than they did before the pandemic, which is contributing to higher-than-expected inflation.
Vincent made the comments in his first speech as deputy governor today to the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal.
According to his prepared remarks, Vincent says the Bank of Canada believes that higher-than-expected inflation over the last year is “intimately linked” to larger and more frequent price increases from businesses.

“When there’s dynamic demand, there’s just no way that increasing supply is going to all of a sudden reduce prices by 10, 15 or 20 per cent,” Mr. Clayton said. “The only way to do that is what happened back in the late latter 1980s and early ‘90s, and in the first half of the ‘70s – have a big recession, lose a lot of jobs.”
Liberal MP Greg Fergus has been elected the new Speaker of the House of Commons — and his first challenge will be to help Parliament turn the page on the embarrassing Yaroslav Hunka incident.
Fergus, who represents the Quebec riding of Hull-Aylmer near Ottawa, is the first Black Speaker of the Commons.
