It’s the Right Time to Rethink ‘Post-Nation’ Canada

There is reason enough for Canadians to be hopeful, even optimistic, about the future. It is tempting to despair in light of problems like inflation, ever-worsening housing affordability, and a possible tariff war with our largest trading partner. But Canada has good reason to believe in itself.

The U.S. president-elect is particularly taken with the idea of Canada becoming the 51st American state. Trolling aside, Donald Trump’s Canadian ambitions are more compliment than threat, and an indicator of the strategic importance of our vast country.

Smith threatens ‘national unity crisis’ over Ottawa’s threat to cut off Alberta oil exports to U.S.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said there would be a ‘national unity crisis’ if Ottawa attempted to stop the flow of Alberta oil and gas to the U.S. in a potential trade dispute with President-elect Donald Trump.

Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods unless Canada resolves its border security problems. On Sunday, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Canada is not ruling out the restriction of energy exports to the U.S. as a potential countermeasure.

Within a fortnight Trudeau will be followed out the door by Joe Biden, and with a German election just around the corner, I suspect Olaf Scholz knows that he is next.

The decision by the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, this week to resign as head of the Liberal party has set in motion a leadership race against the backdrop of a looming general election, which will be held amid political turmoil triggered by Donald Trump’s America First economic nationalism. It has also given Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, an opportunity to inject himself into yet another country’s political turmoil.

Since Trudeau’s resignation on Monday, Musk has posted repeatedly about Canadian politics on X – the platform formerly known as Twitter he bought in 2022 for $44bn. He has praised clips of Pierre Poilievre, the leader of Canada’s Conservative party, while relishing in Trudeau’s downfall and engaging with rightwing Canadian influencers.

When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was elected in 2015, he promised sunny ways and “a real change.”

Over the last nine years, there’s no doubt his government has focused on fighting climate change, advancing Indigenous reconciliation and lifting some Canadians out of poverty.

But critics argue the Trudeau government has damaged Canada’s international reputation and the consensus around immigration.

Trudeau was the worst thing ever to happen to Canada. End of story.

Poll finds pessimism among Canadian job seekers

Almost half of Canadian job seekers (46%) believe there will be fewer job opportunities in their field in 2025 compared to a year ago, according to a new Express Employment Professionals-Harris Poll survey. This is a significant increase from 2024’s survey when only 31% of job seekers expected fewer job opportunities than the previous year.

While one-third of job seekers (36%) believe opportunities in their field in 2025 will remain consistent with 2024, less than 1 in 5 (18%) believe there will be more job opportunities this year in their field.

Court Hands Jail Sentence, Community Service to 2 Coutts Border Protesters

One man has been given jail time for his role in the Coutts border blockade in Alberta in 2022, while another was sentenced to community time.

Marco Van Huigenbos was sentenced to four months in jail and Gerhard (George) Janzen received a three-month sentence, which is to be served in the community. Janzen was also ordered to complete 100 hours of community service within the three months.

How Trump could declare a national emergency to hit Canada with 25 per cent tariffs

WASHINGTON — United States president-elect Donald Trump may declare a national emergency in order to turn his threat to slap Canada with 25 per cent across-the-board tariffs into a reality.

With less than two weeks to go until Trump returns to the White House, it’s still not clear how the Republican leader will enact his tariff agenda. Greta Peisch, the former general counsel for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, said the incoming president could use the International Economic Emergency Powers Act (IEEPA).

I really don’t care that the Corporate Welfare Class gets hurt they deserve it but Canadian workers will also suffer.

Hassan Diab, 71, was convicted of having taken part in a 1980 Paris synagogue bombing that left four dead and dozens injured.
